Dying Light: The Beast Developer Outlines Improvements to Volatiles for More Terrifying Nights

Techland has detailed enhancements to the Dying Light gameplay in the upcoming Dying Light: The Beast, including updates to parkour and combat. However, what about the night, a distinctive feature and nod to the survival horror genre of the series? In a recent Steam post, the developers have shared details on how they aim to deliver a “night experience that is truly terrifying, with an intense, nerve-wracking tension reminiscent of the iconic after-hours scenes from the original Dying Light.

For our project, we formed a specialized task force consisting of programmers, game creators, and level designers. This team consistently refined their work during the entire game development process. Some weeks concentrated on developing volatile behavior, while others emphasized spawning rules and chase mechanics. Ultimately, our aim is to create a night system that appears random and scary, ensuring a unique gaming experience you won’t forget easily.

As a gamer venturing through Castor Woods, I’ve noticed that the nights have been intentionally made eerie and foreboding to set the mood. However, it’s not always the same across all locations. For instance, in the Natural Reserve, the forests are so dark you can barely see your hand in front of your face. On the flip side, in the city, you’ll often find burning barrels that not only add a grim atmosphere but also make it tough to sneak past undetected.

The Volatiles have been updated to “more aggressively” pursue players, whether they are alone or in groups. To heighten your awareness of them, we’ve improved our spawning mechanics, so you sense their presence no matter the location. Additionally, considering our vehicles and the variety of the map, which includes narrow streets and open fields, we had to adjust gameplay experiences accordingly.

According to feedback from Gamescom attendees and influencers who tested it, Techland made substantial enhancements to the Volatile’s movement mechanics and running animations. They also modified the retreat behavior conditions, making Volatiles even more aggressive in fights. There are now more jump grabs and attacks for them, and they can spot players more efficiently. So, don’t forget your flashlight when they’re nearby. Moreover, Volatiles look bloodier and come in a wider variety of types, with each one being scarier and uniquely terrifying.

The game titled “Dying Light: The Beast” is set to release on September 19th, available on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Additionally, it will be made accessible on Xbox One and PS4 towards the end of this year. For comprehensive details, feel free to explore our feature!
