Matt Huang, the crypto venture capitalist and co-founder of Paradigm, boldly claims, “Tempo is purpose-built for stablecoins and real-world payments.”
Stripe and Paradigm Unveil Tempo to Lead the Charge in Onchain Payments
Well, well, if you’ve been living under a rock, let me break it to you: Bitcoin is the “digital cash” of the people, Ethereum is the all-knowing computer of the world, and now-drum roll, please-Tempo, a brand-new blockchain birthed by Stripe and Paradigm, is setting its sights on becoming the undisputed king of payments.
If Stripe is a name that rings no bells for you, it’s time to wake up and smell the digital coffee. This $91.5 billion giant handles payments in over 135 currencies and has its tentacles in 51 countries. I bet you’ve used Stripe without even knowing it-90% of U.S. adults have bought something from a business using Stripe, according to the company’s own dazzling stats.

And let’s talk about Stripe’s creators for a moment, the Irish brothers John and Patrick Collison, who launched Stripe in 2010 after snagging a spot in the prestigious Y Combinator accelerator. Fast forward, and these two have become YC’s shining stars. As YC founder Paul Graham put it in a 2013 essay, “Stripe is one of the most successful startups we’ve funded, and they solved a very urgent problem.” Urgent, indeed. With over $1.6 billion raised in capital, Stripe has etched its name into YC’s history books.
Now, let’s shift gears to Paradigm. Founded in 2018 by Matt Huang and Fred Ehrsam, the firm is no slouch either. Managing three funds, including a hefty $850 million fund closed in June 2024, Paradigm’s total assets hover around the $9-13 billion mark. Not too shabby, right?
So, what happens when these two heavyweights-Stripe and Paradigm-team up to create a blockchain that is, as they say, “payments-first”? Enter Tempo. Currently in testnet, Tempo promises to outshine Bitcoin, Ethereum, and even Solana in the payment realm. Bold claim? Maybe. But who doesn’t love a little healthy competition?
“As stablecoins go mainstream, there’s a growing need for optimized infrastructure,” Huang tweeted. “Tempo is purpose-built for stablecoins and real-world payments, forged from Stripe’s experience in global payments and Paradigm’s expertise in crypto.” Sounds like a match made in blockchain heaven, doesn’t it?
