Disney+ Announces Historic Sunday Release for Hit New Show

As a movie critic, I’m excitedly anticipating the Sunday debut of an unprecedented new show on Disney+. Unlike traditional cable or network programmers, Disney+ operates as a streaming service, giving it the flexibility to bypass primetime slots. Yet, interestingly enough, the company has chosen Sundays for this release, a less common time slot compared to weeknights when most premieres occur. This unconventional move could mark a significant shift in the streaming landscape.

Disney has chosen to debut their upcoming original series, titled “Traveling with Snow Man“, on Sundays. This unscripted reality show is a collaboration between Disney and Nippon TV, which documents the travels of the popular Japanese boy band, Snow Man, across Japan. According to the latest Disney+ schedule, new episodes of “Traveling with Snow Man” will be released every Sunday in September, and by the end of the month, six out of the ten episodes in the first season will have been aired.

This unique release plan sets a new precedent for Disney+ as “Traveling with Snow Man” is the first live-action original series to air fresh episodes every Sunday in the U.S. Previously, some Disney+ shows have been scheduled for weekends; however, these have usually been either all-at-once releases (also known as binge drops) or part of an alternative release schedule, rather than a regular weekly Sunday schedule.

Titled “Journeying Side by Side with the Snow Men,” this series features all nine members of the much-loved boy band that made their debut in 2020 and have since then sold more than 20 million records in Japan. The show aims to offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the band members’ lives outside of performances, while also serving as a travel guide for some of Japan’s top tourist destinations. The series premiered on July 27, 2025.

Disney+ Releases That Have Premiered on Sundays

What If…? Season 3

In other words, “What If…?” could be described as the debut animated television series by Marvel Animation, where it delves into the escapades of well-known MCU characters and antagonists, exploring their adventures beyond the main universe’s timeline.

Following Season 1, the show What If…? opted for a unique approach to its release schedule. Instead of airing new episodes once a week, they were released one after another for an entire week. For instance, during December 2023, a fresh episode from Season 2 would premiere on Sunday, the 24th. Similarly, in December 2024, two episodes from Season 3 were scheduled to debut on Sundays, the 22nd and the 29th.

Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld

In simpler terms, the animated series for kids titled “Tales of the Underworld” featured popular characters from Lucasfilm’s history such as Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane.

As a movie enthusiast penning my thoughts, let me tell you that “Tales of the Underworld” joined the ranks of uncommon series debuting on a Sunday, and more specifically, on May 4, 2025, a date strategically chosen to align with Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you). Unlike “Traveling with Snow Man,” which unfolded week by week, “Tales of the Underworld” opted for a Sunday binge release, giving viewers the chance to immerse themselves in the series all at once.

Bluey

In a unique approach, the beloved kids’ show Bluey from Australia has frequently set its own pace when it comes to releasing new seasons, especially with Season 3, which spans several years and doesn’t follow a typical season-by-season schedule.

Disney+ holds the rights for the American broadcast of ABC-made series “Bluey,” with Season 3 episodes being rolled out weekly on Sundays from 2021 to 2024. However, the schedule was irregular as some episodes were released two days in a row or with significant pauses between parts, making it challenging to predict when new content would arrive. The latest release of “Bluey” special episodes occurred in April 2024 but consisted of only three specials, leading some fans to worry that the series might have been discontinued.
