Ghost of Yotei Director Shoots Down Popular Fan Theory

The highly-anticipated follow-up to the 2020 action game sensation, “Ghost of Tsushima,” titled “Ghost of Yotei,” is mere weeks away from its launch date. As enthusiasts eagerly await its arrival, they have been speculating about possible connections between the upcoming title, set 300 years into the future, and the original game. During PlayStation’s State of Play in July, astute viewers noticed references to “Ghost of Tsushima,” including a hint that the new protagonist, Atsu, could be linked to Jin and the Sakai clan in some fashion. This connection is suggested by the inclusion of Jin’s helmet as one of the nods.

In a swift series of questions during an interview with MinnMax, Nate Fox, co-director of “Ghost of Yotei”, dismissed this fan theory by stating that the game’s protagonist is unconnected to Jin and has no prior knowledge of him. This conforms to expectations, considering the significant time difference between the two games. Consequently, it appears that the narrative of “Ghost of Yotei” may not heavily lean on its precursor for backstory.

How Ghost of Yotei Connects to Tsushima

During an interview with MinnMax’s Ben Hanson, Fox was queried about Atsu’s connection and understanding of Jin. Given the fast-paced nature of the conversation, Fox responded succinctly with a “no” for both queries. However, when discussing whether Jin is renowned in the realm of Ghost of Yotei, Fox playfully sipped from his mug, subtly suggesting that Jin may be mentioned but not prominently featured. This interpretation is further supported by Fox’s subsequent response denying any direct references to the events of Ghost of Tsushima in the new game.

Actually, as per Fox’s assertion, the tale of the Ghost of Yotei becomes so open-ended that either conclusion drawn from Ghost of Tsushima could plausibly represent the actual events.

“It’s 300 years-plus later. Both endings are valid,” Fox said.

As a gamer, I’m thrilled that the Ghost of Yotei is being granted the artistic liberty to step away from the narrative of Tsushima, offering fans an exciting fresh start devoid of any previous baggage or expectations. This is one reason I believe the Souls series has thrived: each installment introduces a brand new, intriguing world to discover.

Though a part of me yearns for an official conclusion regarding Jin’s life, I can only hope that the upcoming game offers hints about how he spent his later years and whether he found tranquility in old age. The additional story presented in the Iki Island DLC demonstrates Jin’s ability to deal with some of his past regrets, but it leaves room for his journey to extend further.

Irrespective of the relationship between Atsu and Jin or further insights about the original protagonist’s ending, it appears that Yotei promises an enjoyable experience. The cooperative mode from the Legends will be included in Ghost of Yotei, similar to its predecessor. However, as with the previous version, it won’t be accessible straight after release. Ghost of Yotei also plans to showcase a more lively open world and intends to emphasize exploration, addressing a frequent concern expressed by fans of Ghost of Tsushima. The game is set for exclusive launch on the PS5 on October 2nd of this year.

How do you feel about the latest game’s choice to diverge from “Ghost of Tsushima”? Does it leave you somewhat disheartened that Jin and Atsu are not connected by blood or another type of relationship?
