Previously well-loved within the Hollywood scene, the genre of spoof films is aiming for a reemergence. This past summer brought us the return of the beloved action comedy franchise, The Naked Gun, with Liam Neeson adding fresh energy to it. Moreover, this isn’t the only timeless brand coming back to cinemas. The following summer will bring us Scary Movie 6, the latest edition in the extensive series of horror spoof films. What’s intriguing about this project is that it brings the original franchise creators, the Wayans brothers, back together. Fans are buzzing with anticipation over which horror movies they will satirize this time around. Recently, Marlon Wayans has given us a glimpse of what we can look forward to.
During an interview with ComicBook to publicize his latest film titled “Him“, Wayans talked about the upcoming sixth installment of “Scary Movie” and mentioned several recent horror hits that could be spoofed in the next sequel. “I’m just a fan of the entire genre,” he stated, “and I believe “I Know What You Did Last Summer” might have some potential. I think the “Scream” series is always a fantastic choice. “Heretic“, “Longlegs“, “Get Out“, “Nope“, and “Sinners” are also some excellent horror films that we intend to have fun with in the sequel.
Scary Movie 6 Is Arriving at the Perfect Time

Over the years, horror films have consistently been a fan favorite, as evident by the extensive list of titles spoofed by the Scary Movie series. However, in recent times, there’s been a surge of critically acclaimed horror movies that not only excelled at the box office but also left an indelible mark on pop culture. Among these new wave of horror filmmakers, Jordan Peele has stood out as a groundbreaking talent, with films like Get Out (nominated for Best Picture), Us, and Nope to his credit. Earlier this year, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners was a sensation, surpassing box office predictions and garnering widespread acclaim due to its skillful blending of thought-provoking themes and exhilarating genre elements.
It seems as though we’re experiencing an ideal moment for the creation of Scary Movie 6, given the absence of similar content in the market and an abundance of material for the filmmakers to work with. The response to The Naked Gun has highlighted this gap, and it will be intriguing to see how Wayans and Co. playfully parody each target. Each movie mentioned offers its own distinctive elements, iconic imagery, and memorable moments that could seamlessly blend into the Scary Movie series. One might even anticipate a scene inspired by the now famous hypnosis sequence from Get Out or a musical segment reminiscent of Sinners.
In my perspective, Wayans doesn’t explicitly mention weapons, but it seems inevitable that they will be included eventually. The movie, having garnered widespread critical acclaim and ruling the box office throughout August, left quite an impact. With memorable scenes like the terrified Aunt Gladys and the running children, it would feel like a squandered opportunity if some elements from this movie weren’t incorporated into Scary Movie 6. Similar observations can be made about The Conjuring Universe, which has become one of horror’s most prosperous franchises since Scary Movie 5 in 2013.
The resurgence of horror franchise sequels opens up a chance for the Wayans brothers to revive the original essence of their “Scary Movie.” Originally released in 2000, the film was heavily inspired by movies like “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” which both still have ongoing series. The long-awaited return of “Scary Movie” presents a fertile ground for self-referential humor, and we can look forward to enjoying the full reboot next summer.
