3 Cult-Classic 1970s Horror Movies That Really Need a Reboot (And Only One Might Happen)

The 1970s gifted horror movie enthusiasts several timeless masterpieces, many of which have been reimagined. Notably, films such as “Dawn of the Dead”, “The Wicker Man”, “Last House on the Left”, “Suspiria”, “The Crazies”, “The Hills Have Eyes”, “When a Stranger Calls” have all undergone remakes. Additionally, there are those that initiated series that still thrive today (and have also been remade at times), including “The Omen”, “The Amityville Horror”, “The Exorcist”, “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre”, and “Halloween”. In fact, even some of the decade’s more recognized B-movies have been remade, like “Piranha”.

Instead of focusing on ’70s horrors that have been rebooted or sequeled recently, let’s talk about those movies that haven’t had such treatment in quite some time. As you might expect, no major classics are included because they’ve already been revived. Also, the movie “It’s Alive,” a well-known cult classic from the ’70s, was missing from this list since it received a remake back in 2009.

3) Grizzly

In the aftermath of the monumental success of Jaws, numerous movies featuring animals attacking humans began appearing. Among these, none were as blatant as Grizzly, which emerged just a year later. This film shamelessly copied almost every plot point and character type found in Steven Spielberg’s classic, but with significantly less impact.

As a film enthusiast, I must admit that this movie is a rollercoaster of fun and absurdity, often leaning towards seriousness. The idea of a bear on a rampage might sound terrifying in reality, considering their power and unpredictability in the wild. However, if the script avoids any resemblance to the classic Jaws, it could make for an exciting cinematic experience.

2) Attack of the Killer Tomatoes

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is actually a comedy film that spoofs horror movies, but it does contain some suspenseful scenes, so we’re counting it. Additionally, this movie spawned three sequels, one of which launched George Clooney’s career, however, no further installments have been made since 1992.

The success of The Naked Gun demonstrates that comedy still has a place in the cinematic world. With an abundance of horror films around today, it could be refreshing to create a film like Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, which satirizes the genre. Given that we’re expecting a sixth Scary Movie, this concept seems achievable, though it may first appear on streaming platforms.

1) Frogs

The film ‘Frogs,’ a captivating choice for a nighttime watch, remains just as relevant today. The storyline centers around an outsider who manages to secure an invitation to a wealthy family’s private island. However, this affluent clan, particularly its patriarch, amassed their wealth through environmental degradation. As a result, nature is exacting its retribution upon them in a violent manner.

In a different phrasing: Sam Elliott was ideally suited to play the role of the commoner amidst those who’d typically shun him, so if they could locate an actor with a similar weight and charm, a fresh take on “Frogs” could be successful. Despite the affluent continuing to ravage the ecosystem, there’s likely an audience eager to witness them being menaced by spiders and alligators (though no frog ever attacks a person in the film, that’s just one of the many captivating aspects of “Frogs”).
