Over the past few years, I’ve found myself in a bit of a limbo regarding Danny Rand, the Iron Fist. The Netflix series didn’t quite hit the mark critically, and the debates about his race and history have left a bit of a stain on him. But as a die-hard fan, I know Danny is more than just the drama. His comic book death and the passing of the Iron Fist mantle to Lin Lie had many fans worried that Marvel was retiring the character. Thankfully, Marvel swiftly brought him back to life in the mini-series, “The Undead Iron Fist.

Initially, there was a sense of apprehension about the debut of “The Undead Iron Fist” comic, given Danny’s departure from the Immortal Iron Fist title he’d been associated with for so long. However, writer Jason Loo and artist Fran Galan surpassed expectations, presenting a strong first issue that sets a new course for Danny Rand’s journey. This inaugural issue is certain to rekindle fans’ belief in Danny’s significance within the Marvel Universe. Despite Danny’s temporary status in “The Undead Iron Fist”, the comic implies there are numerous tales yet to be told about Danny Rand.

Danny Rand Returns With a New Rad Costume in Undead Iron Fist

The most attractive aspect of ‘Undead Iron Fist’ is the brand-new, revamped outfit for Danny, skillfully designed by artist Von Randal. This redesign offers a unique, never-before-seen take on the Iron Fist character while still maintaining its recognizable identity. The full facemask and the gold armor on Danny’s right arm are attention-grabbing details, with the mask adding an intriguing element and the golden armor standing out. The color scheme of purple and yellow works beautifully with Danny’s new body design. However, a minor criticism regarding the design is that it shifts Danny’s fists from their iconic yellow to purple, a change that departs from the character’s long-established image.

Although there are a few points to address about the costume, overall it performs exceptionally well. If Lin Lie remains as the primary Iron Fist character and adheres to the classic look, then Danny’s new Von Randal outfit would be an excellent fit for the character’s future portrayals. The main cover art, skillfully created by renowned artist Whilce Portacio, significantly adds to the suit’s appeal, making it appear stylish and significant.

While there are some aspects of the costume that need refinement, it does an outstanding job in most areas. If Lin Lie continues as the lead Iron Fist character while keeping the traditional appearance, then Danny’s new Von Randal suit aligns perfectly with the character’s future depictions. The primary cover artwork, masterfully crafted by industry legend Whilce Portacio, significantly enhances the suit’s appeal, making it look both trendy and impactful.

The core narrative presents a straightforward account, leaving the enigma of Danny’s resuscitation somewhat unexplained. Readers are merely informed that Danny underwent months in the underworld, scaling a mountain, before extricating himself from his grave to embark on a fresh mission. This assignment involves him battling invisible demons, which he alone can perceive. An amusing action sequence ensues when some of these demons take over humans in public places, causing Danny to fight against what appear to be an ordinary family. In contrast to his usual laid-back and charming demeanor, Danny appears more aggressive and serious in this storyline. Some fans might find this change unsettling, but it underscores the character’s unusual resurrection experience. Furthermore, Danny’s urgency can be attributed to the time constraints he is under. This shift in personality fits well within the narrative, as Danny’s return from the dead is subtly suggested as lacking any glamour or fanfare.

Galan’s sketches evoke a moody ambiance with a hint of unease. His character dimensions might be somewhat irregular and inconsistent, but he shines when depicting action and movement. The battle sequences are clear and fast-paced. Some of the demon designs are unremarkable and easily forgettable, yet Galan’s dynamic energy adds much of the artwork’s appeal. The issue is rich in heavy ink and shadows, giving it a gloomy and ominous feel. Although the first issue may seem light on content, it compensates with its intrigue and straightforward action sequences. Despite the undead Danny Rand and darker setting, this comic ranks among the most enjoyable Danny Rand-focused stories in recent years.
