New Vampire Diaries Book Reveals Why Klaus & Caroline Didn’t End up Together

Eight years after “The Vampire Diaries” finished its eight-season broadcast, the explanation behind why beloved characters Klaus and Caroline never ended up together is now unveiled. In Samantha Highfill’s recently published book about the series’ behind-the-scenes details, Julie Plec, one of TVD’s executive producers, has given insight into the creative choice that stopped Joseph Morgan’s Klaus and Candice King’s Caroline from becoming romantically involved.

Julie Plec on why The Vampire Diaries didn’t bring Klaus and Caroline together

As stated in Highfill’s “I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries” book, the romantic relationship between Klaus and Caroline didn’t come to pass because he was tied up with a spin-off series of The Vampire Diaries called The Originals. (via Swoon)

According to Plec’s account, it proved challenging not to continue exploring a relationship brimming with chemistry on the book. Eventually, the writers of The Vampire Diaries needed Klaus to depart from the primary series to pave the way for his role in The Originals series. Since Caroline was irreversibly tied to the main show, the writers were compelled to devise an alternative plotline.

Caroline Dries, both writer and producer, pointed out that due to Klaus’ involvement in a romantic triangle for the Vampire Diaries spin-off, it wouldn’t be possible for him to develop a relationship with Caroline.

Moreover, Plec shared, “I was set on bringing Stefan and Caroline closer, but eventually, I thought Elena would reunite with Stefan, giving Caroline the freedom to pursue relationships of her own. Perhaps The Originals would guide us towards this outcome, or maybe it wouldn’t.

Previously, during an interview with TVLine, Plec stated that although the characters “might have wound up as a couple” in the original series, she felt it was important not to trivialize Stefan by making Klaus his primary love interest for Caroline.
