With the official launch of Hollow Knight: Silksong last week, reviews are now surfacing and being added to aggregators such as Metacritic. However, Team Cherry opted against providing advance review copies, meaning that the first reviews only became available a few days after the game’s release. As more reviews continue to emerge in the near future, Silksong’s score is expected to change before eventually stabilizing over the next couple of weeks. At this point, it appears that Silksong is shaping up to be one of the standout games of the year, once again demonstrating Team Cherry’s exceptional talent.
On the PlayStation 5, the Metacritic score for “Silksong” stands at an impressive 92, narrowly trailing another potential Game of the Year contender, “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33,” which boasts a 93 average from 83 critic reviews. On PC, both games are currently neck and neck, with “Silksong” slightly behind “Blue Prince,” another Game of the Year hopeful. While “Silksong” is undoubtedly a major achievement, it hasn’t yet secured the title of highest-rated game of the year.
Will Silksong Become Game of the Year?
Expedition 33 and Blue Prince, there may be some recency bias that could benefit it during The Game Awards in December.
At The Game Awards, where public voting makes up just 10% of the total votes, the outcomes are predominantly determined by a panel of experts, consisting of industry insiders, game journalists, critics, and reviewers. Tracking Metacritic scores can provide insights into how these professionals are forming their opinions about new releases in advance of the event. Currently, _Silksong_ has an impressive 92 score from only 11 critic reviews, indicating a very positive outlook, and it’s expected that its score will continue to climb as more reviews come in.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but admire Team Cherry’s innovative and straightforward style that sets them apart from many other game developers. Their $20 indie masterpiece, Silksong, has the potential to create quite a stir in the award-winning circles. However, there are some critics who find fault with aspects like the increased difficulty level within the game. Yet, it’s heartening to know that Team Cherry is ready to engage with this feedback and are planning updates to make Silksong just a touch less challenging, ensuring an even more enjoyable experience for players like me.
It’s been amazing to witness the incredible passion from fans about the game Silksong. I really hope it receives its due recognition at the upcoming event in December. While Team Cherry’s remarkable creation certainly deserves every bit of praise it gets, I’m reluctant to immediately brand it as “Game of the Year.” Although it truly is worthy of that title, it faces strong competition from equally deserving, high-quality games. Besides Blue Prince and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, 2025 also introduced the entertaining game Split Fiction, along with Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector, the tabletop-inspired sequel RPG.
