The X-Men comic franchise is remarkably intricate due to several factors. Firstly, the characters and their stories exploded in popularity during the 1980s, causing Marvel to expand the X-Men’s presence within the larger Marvel Universe by introducing mutants and creating a mini cosmos of sorts. This has led to an expansive cast of X-Men characters and numerous storylines intertwined with each other. Even obscure X-Men characters have unique tales that often complicate matters for others.
Another significant factor contributing to the complexity is the numerous alternate universes and the various schemes associated with them. The past six years have seen a heavy focus on these multi-universe narratives, which have only grown more complex with the arrival of X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha #1.
Issue #1 of “X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha” is a captivating comic that transports fans to the “Age of Apocalypse” realm once more. However, this world deviates significantly from the familiar one we’ve come to know, and the story itself provokes an intriguing question: Is this the genuine timeline or merely a different universe? This is indeed a compelling conundrum; while it can be argued that our current 616 universe is authentic, even that is debatable. Characters like Moira MacTaggert, and the fate of the “Age of Apocalypse” as depicted in stories such as “Age of Apocalypse” (2005) #1-6, “The Dark Angel Saga”, and both volumes of “Age of Apocalypse”, have left room for speculation about whether we’re residing in the “correct” X-Men universe or if Marvel has made their own universe an alternate reality instead.
What Is the Real X-Men Timeline?
Initially, let’s rewind to the year 1994 and the comic book “Legion Quest”. In this tale, Legion traveled back in time to ancient Israel with the intention of eliminating Magneto before he met Xavier, preventing their disagreement and Xavier from gathering a team of teen soldiers to battle Magneto. Unfortunately, Legion ended up killing Xavier instead. Consequently, the events that unfolded became known as the Age of Apocalypse in the main 616 universe. The original X-Men managed to reverse these actions, restoring normalcy. Later on, this alternate universe was established, with Jean Grey transforming into Phoenix following her death and averting a nuclear attack that ended the initial storyline. In “X-Men of Apocalypse”, we find ourselves in a world where the X-Men miraculously survived the said nuclear attack, but it’s not the same alternate universe as depicted in later series set there. This could potentially imply that the original Age of Apocalypse somehow managed to survive, which could lead to an intriguing plot twist in the series. We still don’t have many details about what transpired back then, but it certainly sets the stage for some exciting revelations!
The Krakoa Era in X-Men comics presents an intriguing twist as we delve into Moira MacTaggert’s unique powers. Each time she dies, the timeline resets back to her birth, implying that multiple versions of the X-Men’s history exist. This raises questions about which timeline is accurate and whether Moira’s actions have influenced not just one universe but the entire multiverse. The current X-Men stories grapple with these complexities, leaving readers unsure about the exact universe they’re following and questioning if Moira’s existence has distorted the multiverse. As Victor von Doom (Sinister) suggests in X-Men: Apocalypse Alpha #1, time doesn’t loop, suggesting that there’s a hidden factor keeping the X-Men alive despite their perceived mortality. The timeline is becoming increasingly complex and may continue to do so as the story unfolds.
Which Timeline Will Triumph?
To put it straight from my perspective as a fan, it’s fair to say that it seems highly unlikely for Marvel Comics to confirm that the Age of Apocalypse universe is our actual reality. Frankly, they don’t seem to be the type to delve too deeply into such concepts – unlike DC Comics, which often take intriguing ideas and run with them, uncovering unexpected truths along the way.
However, considering the recent plot twists and the mysteries that have been unfolding in Marvel’s storylines, the notion that our timeline might not be what we think it is has never felt more plausible. It’s an intriguing thought, one that keeps me on the edge of my seat waiting to see where this narrative goes next.
In various X-Men comic books, readers have been transported into numerous alternative realities. These alternate universes have significantly influenced the main storyline on multiple occasions. Throughout the Krakoa Era, this concept has played a central role. It’s intriguing to ponder about these alternate realities, and I hope we’ll uncover some answers in the future.
