The long-standing video game, “Final Fantasy 7,” has amassed enough content for detailed fan theories to develop as players meticulously dissect the game’s material, searching for any clues hinting at unforeseen aspects about Gaia and its inhabitants. With the upcoming remake trilogy, there’s a possibility that fan theories speculated since the initial release of “FF7” could be officially integrated into the game’s narrative.
In contrast to other Final Fantasy titles, “Final Fantasy 7” has fewer theories surrounding its summons, as these entities are frequently recurring throughout the series. However, “FF7” presents a unique summon, specifically, the Knights of the Round.
In the game Final Fantasy 7, Knights of the Round is the most powerful summon you can obtain. However, it hasn’t been included in the trilogy remake so far, as players won’t reach Round Island to acquire it until the third part of the trilogy. Unlike the original summon, which was merely a reference to the Knight of the Round Table from King Arthur’s tale, developers appear to be pondering over giving this summon a more substantial link to the game world in the remake version.
The Knights of the Round Could Be Ancient Cetra
Aerith stands alone as the last known Cetra on Earth, with her ancestors once flourishing in a civilization of their own. Tragically, their downfall began with the arrival of Jenova, a catastrophe from the heavens that resonates deeply when considering Gaia’s history. Fans often speculate that this event prompted the formation of the Knights of the Round Materia, an artifact enabling the summoning of the Knights of the Round.
According to this notion, the knights who form part of the Knights of the Round are believed to be reincarnations of ancient Cetra warriors. These warriors allegedly confined Jenova within the Northern Crater, where she stayed hidden until Shinra discovered her and mistakenly identified her as a Cetra. In this theory, these knights decided to develop a materia capable of summoning them back if Jenova were to be released again, thus protecting the planet from any future threats by her.
The theory suggests that the Knights of the Round may be linked to Jenova, as there’s scant evidence to support this notion but one intriguing observation: employing Knights of the Round against Jenova-SYNTHESIS results in the boss being defeated with a single attack. However, using these knights on that same boss will unexpectedly boost the health of the final boss, Safer Sephiroth. This unusual interaction between the summon and these particular bosses has given rise to a theory that the Knights of the Round might have been the original Cetra who imprisoned Jenova, returning to aid in her defeat once more as part of an attempt to save the planet.
This Would Fit with the Current Remake Lore
Given that there’s scant proof supporting the Knights of the Round theory to begin with, it’s plausible for the game developers to choose to incorporate this as an established fact in the final segment of the _FF7_ remake. A minor detail like extra materia text hinting at the knights being Cetra would suffice to transform this prevalent theory into official lore. However, it would be more satisfying if they opted for a cutscene or some other visual element if they do decide to adopt the theory.
I’ve been absolutely thrilled by the reinterpretations in both “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” and “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.” It seems like these games are less of a direct remake and more of a fresh take or sequel on the original game. For instance, there are instances within the remake where it feels as if Aerith and Sephiroth are privy to the events of the original story.
One intriguing detail that could potentially enrich this narrative even further is the possibility of the Knights of the Round summon theory becoming canonical. Granted, this might seem like a minor adjustment in comparison to the significant shifts already underway within the remake trilogy; however, it would certainly add another dimension to this summon and the tale surrounding Jenova’s sealing.
