With rumors circulating about the end of PlayStation 4 support, a well-liked game has recently been taken off the PlayStation Store due to problems and constraints linked to the console itself. The PS4 will celebrate its 12th birthday in November. However, Sony reports that it still boasts millions of active users monthly, and major games are still being released for it. As the PS5 era begins, the PS4 is continuing its run, but it’s becoming increasingly apparent that it’s showing signs of aging, as evidenced by this latest removal from the PlayStation Store’s PS4 section.
Initially launched as an exclusive title for PlayStation 4 (PS4) in 2020, Genshin Impact was initially unavailable on any other gaming consoles. However, since then, it has expanded to be compatible with PS5, Xbox Series X, and other platforms, but it is no longer available on the original PS4 console. The reason behind this, as stated by developer MiHoYo, is due to certain hardware performance and storage limitations inherent in the PS4 system.
What Does This Mean?
Essentially, you can no longer buy “Genshin Impact” for PlayStation 4 in any form. Users who already own the game can continue playing it, but there are some points to take note. For instance, in-game purchases will cease on February 25, 2026. Moreover, the game is scheduled to be discontinued on PS4 on April 8, meaning PS4 users won’t be able to play any version of the game after that date. With over 200 million downloads so far, it’s safe to assume a significant number of players will be affected by this change. The exact figure of those still playing on PS4 is unknown, but we can expect a notable impact on these users.
A Potential Major Problem for PS4
Currently, the problem with the PS4 seems to be a standalone case, yet it raises concerns about other game-as-a-service titles potentially facing similar issues on PS4. As you may know, games are still being released for the PS4 at a steady pace, and even a console exclusive has received a new update 10 years after its release. It seems that developers are not intentionally abandoning the PS4, but given recent reports, Sony might be phasing out the console, which could prompt more developers to follow suit following this recent event.
