In a short span following its release, Valve’s Steam Deck has been an incredible success story. Its portability allowed gamers to carry their favorite PC games with them effortlessly, revolutionizing gameplay for many. To ensure compatibility with the majority of the vast Steam library, Valve has collaborated extensively with developers. Yet, a handful of top-tier games have yet to transition to the portable platform. This can be attributed to several factors; nevertheless, the main hurdles often lie in online multiplayer and anti-cheat systems. Here’s a rundown of the five most popular Steam games that are still unavailable on the Deck:
[Insert list of top 5 Steam games not compatible with Steam Deck]
As a dedicated gamer diving into the world of top-tier games, let me walk you through an exciting journey! Here’s how these games rank based on their maximum number of concurrent players – starting from the least and moving upwards.
Now, it’s important to mention that some of these games have seen a decrease in player base over time. Yet, they still continue to captivate tens of thousands of passionate gamers like me every single day! So buckle up, and let’s explore this epic gaming landscape together.
5) Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege X
- All-Time Peak Player Count – 201,933
Upon the release of the Siege X update for Rainbow Six Siege, the game experienced a fresh surge of vitality. Currently, it continues to attract approximately 70,000 players daily, which, while slightly less than its all-time high, still represents a robust player base.
Regrettably, Siege experiences a common problem with Steam Deck compatibility that affects numerous multiplayer games due to the anti-cheat system developed by Ubisoft not being compatible with the portable platform. This would have been an exciting addition alongside Siege X, but unfortunately, the anti-cheat issue prevented it from happening.
4) Rust
- All-Time Peak Player Count – 262,284
Similar to Siege, Rust’s current number of daily active users is roughly half of its peak player count. This represents a significant decrease, yet it is still an impressive figure for any developer to have over 100,000 concurrent users.
In a manner reminiscent of Siege, the anti-cheat system in Rust prevents it from being Steam Deck compatible due to its compatibility issues with several anti-cheat programs on SteamOS. Regrettably, these issues make it unlikely that you’ll be able to play these games on the Steam Deck unless a developer chooses to disable the anti-cheat or there’s a significant change in the operating system by Steam.
3) Grand Theft Auto V
- All-Time Peak Player Count – 364,548
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but marvel at how Grand Theft Auto V has managed to maintain its impressive popularity since its launch over a decade ago. A big part of that success can be attributed to Rockstar’s unwavering commitment to GTA Online. Even with an average daily player count of 65,000, it’s safe to say that the majority of us fans are eagerly anticipating Grand Theft Auto VI.
In a slightly unusual twist compared to other popular games in the list, Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) functions on Steam Deck, yet it doesn’t support the multiplayer mode, GTA Online. If your primary interest lies in experiencing the offline single-player narrative of GTA V, you can effortlessly do so with the Deck. However, as soon as you attempt to sign in with your online character, you’ll encounter a common anti-cheat issue.
2) Apex Legends
- All-Time Peak Player Count – 624,473
Despite seeing a decline in popularity compared to a few years back, Apex continues to attract approximately 100,000 players daily on Steam. However, its player count doesn’t rival that of the next game. Interestingly, both games encounter similar challenges regarding deck compatibility issues.
For Apex, it’s primarily about anticheat measures and multiplayer capabilities that seem to pose challenges. It’s surprising, given the creative problem-solving abilities of both Valve and other developers, that they haven’t managed to bypass these difficulties, even with titles like Valve’s Counter-Strike 2 partially compatible on the Deck.
1) PUBG: Battlegrounds
- All-Time Peak Player Count – 3,257,248
On Steam, PUBG continues to lead in terms of player count, even as other popular games such as Black Myth: Wukong and Monster Hunter Wilds have seen a decline in their concurrent players. Day after day, PUBG remains one of the most frequently played titles on the platform. Although Black Myth is primarily designed for single-player and many Monster Hunter Wilds players stopped playing once they completed the story, it’s impressive that PUBG, despite being around for several years, maintains such a significant presence in the gaming community.
Currently, at this point in time, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) boasts a player count of more than 600,000 within a 24-hour period, indicating a substantial gaming community on Steam. Regrettably, the game cannot be run on the Steam Deck as it relies on anti-cheat and multiplayer services that are incompatible with the portable device, similar to Apex Legends.
