As an ardent fan, I can’t help but rave about “The Apothecary Diaries“! From its captivating faux-historical backdrop to the intricate politics, unforgettable characters, and the chilling allure of poisonous obsession, this series offers a romance that simmers slowly yet intensely. You’ll find yourself effortlessly engrossed as Maomao follows her curiosity from one case to another, carving out a niche for herself within the Inner Palace (and beyond). Sadly, we must all wait patiently for Season 3 of “The Apothecary Diaries”, but fear not! The manga and light novels are readily available if you need your fix. However, some may be yearning for a fresh anime adaptation to tide them over in the interim.
If you enjoyed “The Apothecary Diaries,” books similar to it often feature historical settings, but they can vary based on what aspects of the series you found most appealing. These may include strong female protagonists, complex characters, political intrigue, and romantic elements. Additionally, there’s a growing interest in stories that delve into the world of poisons and potions. If this theme appeals to you, we have plenty of recommendations.
10) Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master
One could confidently assert that the narrative of “Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master” explores richer realms of mythology and the supernatural compared to what one might find in “The Apothecary Diaries.” Yet, it’s essential to note that this series does not neglect its portrayal of courtly intrigue, complex conspiracy theories, or multidimensional characters.
Yatagarasu: The Masterless Raven” unfolds in the imagined land of Yamauchi, where the line of succession is muddled, resulting in numerous disputes and intrigues. The narrative revolves around Yukiya, a raven tasked to serve Crown Prince Wakamiya. Despite not voluntarily taking on this role, Yukiya understands he’s uniquely placed to aid his prince in his journey towards success. This engaging tale masterfully combines elements of mythology, politics, and drama.
9) Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start with Magical Tools
Blossoming in Dahlia: Creating a New Beginning with Enchanted Crafts” is an enduring isekai series that incorporates everyday life aspects. The narrative revolves around a character who is reborn as Dahlia, finding themselves in a world filled with magic. After her recent broken engagement, she has chosen to channel her energies into mastering the art of magical toolmaking, a talent she possesses, as a fresh start.
This series may not offer the intense political intrigue or enigma found in “The Apothecary Diaries”, but it remains a worthy addition for fans to explore. It’s situated in a fantastical realm, boasts a determined female lead, and delves deeply into introspection. The protagonist, Dahlia, yearns to carve her own destiny, design her inventions, and more. Essentially, she shares some striking resemblances with the qualities that endeared Maomao to us.
8) Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective
If you’re seeking an anime without a vast amount of previous episodes, “Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective” could be an excellent choice for you. The title itself gives a hint about the series plot, as it predominantly revolves around contemporary medical mysteries in an adventurous manner.
At Tenikai General Hospital, there’s Takao Ameku – a resident detective and medical expert who tackles the most challenging cases the hospital presents. With her tenacious, intelligent, and persistent nature, audiences find it easy to admire her. Unlike Maomao, Ameku doesn’t shy away from the limelight for her solved mysteries, as she doesn’t need to concern herself with court politics or threats of beheadings.
7) Nina the Starry Bride
For those captivated by political intrigue, take note of the enchanting tale of “Nina the Starry Bride“. Born into obscurity and overlooked by society, Nina’s mere survival was an uphill battle for her and her companions. Fate, however, presented Nina with a unique twist: she bears an uncanny resemblance to the recently departed princess.
In this rephrased version, I aim to make the text more conversational and easier to understand:
In a world of courtly politics, it’s Nina’s striking appearance that initially draws her in. Yet, it’s her ability to adapt and intelligence that will ensure her survival. Much like Nina, Maomao shares similar beginnings and finds herself unwittingly entangled in politics.
The novel Nina the Starry Bride features a love triangle, offers insightful commentary on women’s roles in their respective societies, and offers much more to explore.
6) Fairies Albums
The animated series “Fairies Albums” delves deeply into the realm of the supernatural, integrating elements of medical mysteries as well. In essence, it’s a historical drama heavily infused with supernatural elements. Accompanying us in this journey is Tao Yao, a spirit doctor. She roams ancient China seeking encounters and assisting spirits. Her companions on this adventure are Mo Ya, a monk, and Liugonzi, a snake demon.
Clearly, there are numerous shared themes between the albums of Fairies and The Apothecary Diaries. Both take place in ancient China, feature characters who are medical professionals of their respective eras, and tackle various mysteries. In Tao Yao’s case, these mysteries span across different spirits.
5) Ascendance of a Bookworm
If you enjoy watching “The Apothecary Diaries” for Maomao’s passion for medicine and poisons, you might find yourself captivated by “Ascendance of a Bookworm.” This series is essentially a tribute to book lovers everywhere. Its central character, Myne, shares your affection for books and immerses herself in the world of literature.
In this new world, Myne finds herself in a time with hardly any books available. Oh, the despair! As one who cherishes literature dearly, Myne devises a strategy to establish a library from scratch. Much like Maomao, Myne demonstrates an obsessive dedication, though their interests differ significantly. These two characters are intelligent, relentless, and undeterred in their pursuit of their passions.
4) Yona of the Dawn
In essence, both “Yona of the Dawn” and “The Apothecary Diaries” share many common themes. However, their protagonists’ backgrounds differ significantly: Yona, being a Princess, is compelled to live in exile, whereas Maomao, an apothecary, finds himself entangled in politics. This ironic contrast is quite intriguing.
The story, titled Yona of the Dawn, centers around its namesake, Princess Yona. Her life is turned upside down when her cousin orchestrates a rebellion, forcing her and her most faithful bodyguard to flee. This captivating tale blends elements of historical fantasy with political intrigue, and for an extra layer of complexity, it also includes a romantic angle.
3) The Saint’s Magic Power Is Omnipotent
The supernatural abilities of the Saint in this Isekai series are boundless, similar to “The Apothecary Diaries” fans might find appealing. Unlike Maomao’s origins, this story takes place in a fictional historical setting, rich with aristocracy and political machinations.
One day after finishing work, Sei Takanashi found herself transported to a fantastical realm called Salutania instead of going home as usual. In this enchanting new world, she’s determined to pursue her interest in the Medicinal Flora Research Institute, hoping to master the craft of brewing potions. As her passions guide her through various adventures, intrigues, and challenges, she encounters different characters along the way. It’s also worth mentioning that this series, titled The Saint’s Magic Power Is Omnipotent, offers a captivating slow-burn romance for fans of Maomao and Jinshi’s relationship.
2) Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits
If you prefer the nurturing themes found in “The Apothecary Diaries,” then I recommend “Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits” as an alternative. This series retains elements of politics, but they are more centered on supernatural spirits and political intrigue from a jokai perspective.
The narrative focuses on Aoi, an ardent chef, who due to her grandfather’s financial obligations, finds herself in deep trouble. Now, she has transitioned into a different world, specifically the Concealed Realm, where she must make crucial decisions. She is faced with two options: marry Odanna to resolve the debt or devise a means to earn enough money to repay it. In response, Aoi establishes a cozy Bed and Breakfast, where she prepares scrumptious meals and spreads warmth among those around her.
1) Snow White with the Red Hair
As an observer, if I were to recommend a choice from this list for a marathon viewing session, it would be “Snow White with the Red Hair”. This anime shares many parallels with other stories you might recognize. The protagonist, Shirayuki, is initially coerced into service but soon captures the attention of a prince, only to find herself in a complex political scenario that necessitates her departure. Doesn’t that seem reminiscent of certain well-known fairy tales or storylines?
Compared to “The Apothecary Diaries,” the show titled “Snow White with the Red Hair” delves deeper into a fantasy world, setting it more in medieval Europe. Despite the difference in setting, they share many common themes, like an affinity for medicine and women navigating court intrigue. The series also places a stronger emphasis on romance, which might appeal to viewers seeking something less gradual than the developing relationship between Jinshi and Maomao.
