The DCU Just Teased the Arrival of Its Next Major Villain

The DC Universe is really investing in its bad guys. After missing out on playing Batman for Matt Reeves, Nicholas Hoult is getting his chance to play Lex Luthor, a billionaire who’s so wicked he wouldn’t think twice about taking out anyone who dares look Superman’s way. Superman isn’t the only member of his family dealing with trouble, as Kara Zor-El has a challenging role ahead in her standalone movie. The main antagonist for Supergirl will be Krem from the Yellow Hills, but Lobo is also expected to show up, and he’ll be portrayed by DC Extended Universe veteran Jason Momoa.

As a movie buff with a soft spot for DC comics, let me share some exciting news: While Lobo might be creating quite a buzz, he’s not the new DC villain grabbing all the limelight. That distinction goes to a formidable Batman adversary who is set to steal the show in his very own film, even before the Dark Knight utters a single line in the DC Universe. It seems that the franchise is fully committed to this character, as they are hinting at his entrance in an unexpected setting.

Peacemaker Isn’t Shying Away From Rick Flag Sr.’s Past

As a die-hard DC Universe fan, I’ve been following Christopher Smith’s journey with great interest. After dismantling the Butterflies in Peacemaker Season 1, he thought things were finally looking up when he attempted to join forces with the Justice Gang. However, Maxwell Lord and his metahuman allies cold-shouldered him, publicly humiliating him.

Finding solace amidst the chaos, Chris discovered an alternate reality where his brother and father are miraculously alive. Life in this realm seemed perfect for him, but trouble always finds a way to catch up. Back home, Rick Flag Sr., seeking revenge for the loss of his son, is determined to get his hands on Peacemaker.

John Economos has been doing an excellent job keeping A.R.G.U.S. off our scent, but it seems that Flag’s next recruit won’t be as easily swayed by flattery or fear. It’s a tough break for Chris, but he’s always been a fighter, and I have no doubt he’ll come out on top in the end.

In Season 2, Episode 4, Flag, having unsuccessfully captured Peacemaker at his residence, pays Emilia Harcourt a visit instead. It’s revealed that she had a closer connection to the general’s son than she had led on, and he intends to exploit this information. However, before discussing business, Harcourt first inquires about Flag’s health because he had recently been hospitalized. Neither Peacemaker nor Superman has ever shown Flag losing a fight, suggesting that another DCU project might hold the key to the mystery. In the series ‘Creature Commandos’, Flag encounters Clayface, resulting in some damage for Flag. This will become more evident as Clayface’s solo movie in 2026 unfolds, demonstrating the villain’s formidable power.

Clayface Isn’t Going to Be One-and-Done in the DCU

In the course of probing Princess Ilana Rostovic’s activities as Pokolistan’s temporary leader, Flag encounters Clayface. To maintain her deception, Ilana employs Clayface to masquerade as a college professor who has unfortunately passed away. When Flag uncovers this secret, Clayface becomes enraged and nearly kills the soldier. Fortunately, Eric Frankenstein steps in to save his new companion and assists in subduing their adversary. The resolution of the struggle suggests that Clayface is no longer a threat; however, creators James Gunn and Co. have more plans for him. Currently, a standalone Clayface film directed by James Watkins and Mike Flanagan is under production, with Tom Rhys Harries set to portray the main character.

James Gunn hasn’t definitively said that the live-action Clayface in the upcoming project will be the same as the one from “Creature Commandos”, but he hasn’t denied it either. If they do turn out to be the same character, it would imply a direct link between “Peacemaker” and the movie, which is consistent with Gunn hinting that his show serves as a prequel to the “Man of Tomorrow” sequel to Superman. In the DC Universe, nothing happens without purpose, so if “Peacemaker” emphasizes that the previous Clayface appearances are crucial, then it’s clear that the character’s future in the franchise is promising, despite his fights primarily taking place in dark alleys by 2026.

Peacemaker Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
