As a dedicated fan of Final Fantasy 7, I was ecstatic when during last Friday’s Nintendo Direct presentation, Square Enix dropped some exciting news – mark your calendars for January 22, 2026, as the long-awaited remake of Final Fantasy 7 is finally making its way onto Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2!
After years of being a PlayStation console exclusive, this announcement has us fans jumping for joy. The best part? If you’re an Xbox player like me, the version for Xbox includes Xbox Play Anywhere support, which means with just one purchase, I get both a PC and console copy of the game – talk about value for money!
Though Square Enix shared a Japanese trailer, it’s still enough to send shivers down my spine in anticipation. Can’t wait for more updates on this epic journey!
Not only is it confirmed that Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will be available on Xbox Series X|S and the rumored Nintendo Switch 2, but the entire remake trilogy will now be playable across multiple platforms. This suggests that players on Xbox and Nintendo can anticipate the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in 2024, along with the unnamed third installment.
This move marks a departure from the original console exclusivity of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 respectively, which were later made available on Windows PC.
Square Enix hasn’t announced a release date for the multiplatform versions of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth yet, but fans might be hoping for a Winter 2026 launch. Given that Square Enix may want to stagger these launches, this timeline could be possible.
Interestingly, Square Enix has also mentioned that the trilogy will be playable on Xbox and PC, among other platforms. This means Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and the upcoming third game should both support Xbox Play Anywhere, similar to Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Early bird bonus for Final Fantasy 7 Remake preorders
Square Enix is offering a tempting incentive for those who preorder Final Fantasy 7 Remake early. If you decide to preorder the game for either Xbox Series X|S or the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, you’ll receive a complimentary version of the original Final Fantasy 7 as part of the deal.
This bonus offer will only be available until the game’s release, so if you’re keen on taking advantage of it, you’ll need to act promptly. Preorders are now live on the Xbox Store, with the standard version priced at $40 and the Deluxe Edition going for $60.
The Deluxe Edition comes with additional in-game items and materia, along with an artbook and soundtrack.
Square Enix continues its multiplatform efforts
With Square Enix steadily expanding their game portfolio across multiple platforms, they’ve moved away from console exclusivity to maximize their title releases. The days of uncertainty about where Square Enix would release their games are long gone, with some earlier launches appearing somewhat disorganized.
Last year, for instance, Octopath Traveler 2 appeared on Xbox while the original Octopath Traveler was released on PlayStation, marking a significant shift in their release strategy. Earlier in 2025, Square Enix also launched Final Fantasy 16 on Xbox Series X|S, offering Xbox Play Anywhere support.
The company has several other upcoming games in the pipeline too, such as a remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. Interestingly, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined was just announced during the latest Nintendo Direct, and like its predecessors, both titles will be available on multiple platforms.
