The increasing fame of the anime industry over the years has led to a significant surge in the number of new series released annually. In 2025, this trend continued to captivate anime enthusiasts with the comeback of popular franchises like Demon Slayer, The Apothecary Diaries, and many others. Newcomers such as Sakamoto Days and Gachiakuta also charmed fans swiftly, winning their hearts within a few episodes.
On the flip side, Fall 2025 promises an exciting lineup with the return of fan favorites like Spy x Family, My Hero Academia, and One Punch Man. Despite the year being filled with numerous highlights, it also saw some heated controversies that garnered much attention among fans.
It’s no overstatement to say that this year has seen a trio of series stirring up quite the buzz: “Lord of Mysteries,” “The Beginning After the End,” and “Solo Leveling.” Despite causing a bit of a stir for different reasons, they all share one unique trait – they’re based on non-Japanese light novels.
“Solo Leveling” has made a name for itself as a popular Korean series, while “The Beginning After the End” broke new ground as an American light novel turned webtoon, later adapted into an anime. On the other hand, “Lord of Mysteries” hails from a Chinese light novel and falls under the category of donghua, essentially Chinese anime. All three have attracted a global audience, making the anticipation for their anime adaptations palpable.
However, these series have found themselves at the heart of controversy. The reasons vary, but one thing remains constant – their impact is undeniable in the world of manga and anime.
3) Lord of Mysteries
The animation quality is exceptional, ranking among the greatest ever produced, but the issue comes with the adaptation process. Due to the source material spanning approximately 1400 chapters, the anime needed to significantly reduce many scenes, resulting in a narrative that moves too swiftly. Already, the first three episodes have condensed around 75 chapters, leaving out numerous original scenes. Given the studio’s substantial budget, they were left with no option but to abridge the original story.
A new issue arose as Crunchyroll decided to reduce the cute additional content in the series, leading to disappointment among international fans. The studio intends to roll out seven seasons over the coming decade, but details about Season 2 are still unrevealed.
2) The Beginning After the End
If you’re a fan of manhwa or webtoons, chances are you’ve encountered TBATE before its anime version came out. Given the series’ widespread acclaim worldwide, it’s understandable how eager fans were for the anime adaptation. However, the adaptation by Studio A-Cat fell short of expectations, almost disappointingly so. This underwhelming outcome could be attributed to budget constraints.
Due to an unforeseen decision by TurtleMe, the author of this novel, selecting a small studio for one-project focus, the outcome was disastrous instead. The backlash was intense and led to over 50,000 fans creating a petition requesting a remake or cancellation of the anime. In a surprising twist, amid the uproar, the studio has announced plans for Season 2 scheduled for April 2026 release. As they have additional time now, the studio might be able to rectify matters, but until a trailer appears, nothing can be definitively confirmed.
1) Solo Leveling
The anime titled Solo Leveling is the only one from the list that has faced no challenges during adaptation. A-1 Pictures have been doing an exceptional job with this series, and it’s expected that Season 3 will be equally impressive. After wrapping up the first two seasons back to back, the studio has yet to provide updates on the next installment, but we might hear from them soon. Given Solo Leveling‘s immense popularity, it’s safe to say that Season 3 is all but confirmed; we simply await an official announcement. The studio’s dedication has significantly increased the anime’s global reach, however, this widespread popularity could potentially be more than it can handle.
The yearly Crunchyroll Anime Awards, decided by audience votes, saw Solo Leveling Season 1 sweep the event this year, even taking home the Anime of the Year award over highly praised series like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and The Apothecary Diaries. However, some viewers argue that the series’ animation and action sequences were not enough to warrant such a multitude of awards, given that the ceremony honored its less critically acclaimed first season. If Season 2 had been in contention, opinions might have differed.
It’s important to note that the light novel and manhwa of Solo Leveling were already well-liked by many before the anime came out. Consequently, it’s understandable that people would vote for what they enjoy. Regrettably, this reality did little to appease the displeasure of those who dislike Solo Leveling.
