Nightwing Might Have His Own Sidekick, But Should He?

Originally, Nightwing was Batman’s first sidekick, Robin, who paved the way for every subsequent teen sidekick in the superhero realm. He established the benchmark for all sidekicks that followed, and despite four other individuals donning the Robin mantle since him, many believe he was the best of them all. Years later, after establishing his own identity apart from Batman, Nightwing may be acquiring a sidekick of his own. The enigmatic elder entity, Zanni, has been orchestrating events in Bludhaven for months, with the aim of molding Nightwing into the leader he desires, so that Zanni can assume the role of ringmaster in his Cirque du Sin. Bryce Moran, a youth influenced by the former Boy Wonder, has transformed into Nightwing-Prime, a Kryptonian driven to change the world; however, it remains uncertain whether this development is beneficial for Nightwing.

Nightwing considers it his duty to guide Bryce, given that Bryce underwent transformation while striving to emulate a hero. He intends to train Bryce in the art of being a responsible hero capable of wielding such immense power. However, it’s uncertain if this is the best course for Nightwing at present. Excluding the aspect of this being part of the Zanni’s strategy, Nightwing is an exceptional character who could excel as a mentor to a sidekick. But currently, his character may not require such responsibilities.

Nightwing Is a Growing Hero

Presently, Nightwing might not require a sidekick; nonetheless, having one isn’t necessarily undesirable in the long run. In his brief stint as Batman, he partnered with Damian Wayne, creating an exceptional dynamic often lauded in comic books. As a seasoned leader among his peers and the superhero community, Nightwing has demonstrated remarkable capability in this role. He also mentored less experienced heroes like Ravager.

Granting the original sidekick a sidekick of his own could symbolize the evolution of his character, reflecting his growth into an independent hero. Given his nature, having someone to engage with can bring out the best in him. However, at this moment, it would be premature to introduce a sidekick for Nightwing. It’s an idea worth considering down the line.

Currently, Nightwing is undergoing an extraordinary development phase. His fame has significantly grown in the past few years, prompting DC Comics to emphasize him as a crucial character within their universe. Nightwing now serves as a key figure, admired by all for his exceptional qualities that combine the strengths of both Batman and Superman without their vulnerabilities. However, he’s still refining his identity in this role, and adding a sidekick at this point would overburden the new character while distracting from Nightwing himself. This action could highlight his hero status but might also strain him as he needs to solidify his own persona, serve as a mentor to other heroes, and defend Bludhaven simultaneously. Wearing multiple hats could be too much for him at this time.

Nightwing’s Cast Is Massive and Tiny

A primary reason for Nightwing not to maintain a permanent sidekick currently lies in the complications with his supporting cast. This group is simultaneously too extensive and insufficiently substantial. As a crucial character within the Batman Family and Titans, there are numerous well-known characters he has shared a rich history with. Yet, all these characters are superheroes, each carrying their own set of issues and talents, which could potentially transform his solo comic into another team book that he leads. On the other hand, Dick Grayson possesses very few character companions who aren’t themselves heroes, and the ones he does have are relatively new. Adding a sidekick now might result in an excess of superheroes, while also lacking non-hero characters to interact with.

At present, introducing Nightwing with a long-term sidekick might not be ideal. It’s evident that Bryce isn’t going to fill that role due to Zanni’s plot and his Kryptonian powers, which could create conflicts with Nightwing’s usual methods. Fortunately, this seems like a good turn of events.
