Prime Video’s Most Exciting Upcoming Fantasy Show Could Be the One That Finally Works

Amazon’s home streaming service, Prime Video, has made numerous attempts to debut its own significant fantasy series, and it seems that an upcoming production could potentially be their most successful yet. Just like other prominent streaming platforms, they’ve delved into the fantasy genre, aiming to uncover the next television phenomenon akin to “Game of Thrones.” The HBO show revolutionized TV landscapes, which explains the surge in attempts to replicate its success, ranging from prequels such as “House of the Dragon” to series like “The Witcher” on Netflix. However, Amazon has already tried several times in this genre, but none have quite met their expectations.

The television series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” costing approximately $1 billion (with $250 million for rights acquisition) hasn’t yet returned its investment. The show has stirred controversy among fans, experiencing a significant drop in viewership during Season 2, despite being renewed for a third season and potentially completing its five-season plan. In contrast to this series, other productions like “The Wheel of Time” were terminated after three seasons, even though there were more books to adapt, and “Carnival Row” ended after only two seasons, failing to make much impact despite high expectations. However, Amazon Prime Video remains optimistic and may find success with one production: “Fourth Wing.

Why Fourth Wing Should Be A Major Fantasy Hit For Prime Video

In Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean Series, or Fourth Wing books, the narrative unfolds within an imaginary universe set at Basgiath College. Here, students are trained to be Scribes, Infantry, Healers, or, notably, Dragon Riders. The central character is Violet Sorrengail, a Dragon Rider, who faces immense challenges in her struggle for survival. Simultaneously, she delves into hidden truths that could alter the destiny of the world as a whole.

The Amazon series titled “Fourth Wing” could potentially become a highly successful fantasy show due to several appealing factors, including a significant amount of interest or buzz surrounding it. While the Romantasy sub-genre might not appeal to everyone, it has proven to be a thriving market. This is evident on social media platforms like TikTok, where the #BookTok trend has accumulated billions of views, and this popularity translates to sales as well. In 2024 alone, Romantasy books accounted for approximately 30 million print sales according to The New York Times, representing a 50% increase over the previous year. All of Yarros’ Empyrean books have been best-sellers, and the latest one, “Onyx Storm,” released in 2025, became the fastest-selling adult novel in the past two decades.

The excitement surrounding these popular book series is undeniably genuine, and it appears to be enduring. Streaming platforms are not ignoring this trend; for instance, Prime Video is creating a show called “Powerless,” based on another successful title in the genre. Netflix has won a high-stakes bidding war to secure the rights for “Quicksilver.” Hulu has been trying for years to adapt one of the genre’s most influential works, “A Court of Thorns and Roses,” but hasn’t been able to bring it to fruition. Among all these, the “Fourth Wing” books have a pre-existing fanbase, broad cultural recognition, and elements like dragons and violence that could make a TV series incredibly popular. In summary, the hype is real, and streamers are taking notice.

In simpler terms, Yarros plays a significant role in creating the show, a level of involvement missing from “The Wheel of Time” series where author Brandon Sanderson didn’t directly contribute. Unlike “The Rings of Power,” there’s a clear source material to draw from for this show. Moreover, Yarros has emphasized that the show will never surpass the books, a promise backed by her rapid writing speed. This helps avoid a problem faced by “Game of Thrones.

Absolutely, the production will undoubtedly encounter hurdles given that the project is still in its infancy. Finding the ideal cast is crucial, and producing this series won’t come cheap for Amazon. The story features numerous dragons of various colors and designs, which are pivotal to the plot. Creating realistic CGI for these dragons will be costly and might present the most significant hurdle. However, these very same dragons also add excitement, as they are used differently compared to “Thrones” and “House of the Dragon.” If handled correctly, it has a strong potential to succeed, especially in areas where other Amazon series have faltered.

The Fourth Wing production is ongoing at Prime Video as of now, however, neither the cast nor the official release date has been announced yet.
