Harry Potter Just Made 4 Remake Castings Way More Difficult for HBO

Finding suitable actors for the TV adaptation of Harry Potter will certainly be a tough task for HBO, given that one of the most admired aspects of the original films is their exceptional casting, particularly for the adult characters. The movie adaptations did an almost perfect job in filling key roles with some of Britain’s finest acting talents. It would be challenging to replace icons like Maggie Smith (as Professor McGonagall) and Alan Rickman (as Professor Snape), but so far, the TV reboot has made a commendable effort at assembling an intriguing cast.

The individuals stepping into these established roles are bound to be measured against their predecessors, yet the expectation is that they might introduce fresh and distinctive aspects to their respective characters, while maintaining respect for the Harry Potter films and critically, the books. This challenge will persist as the show progresses through the novels, and it’s further complicated by another Harry Potter series being developed concurrently: Audible’s full-cast audiobook adaptation, starring actors like Hugh Laurie, Mark Addy, and Matthew Macfadyen. Notably, a recent update to this audiobook series has convincingly portrayed some forthcoming characters before the remake even begins.

Harry Potter Found The Perfect New Bellatrix, Mad-Eye & More (But Too Early)

In the recent auditions for the Audible series, held through HarryPotter.com, a mix of established and emerging British actors have been selected, such as:

  • Kiera Knightley as Dolores Umbridge
  • Kit Harington as Professor Lockhart
  • Iwan Rheon as Professor Lupin
  • James McAvoy as Mad-Eye Moody
  • Simon Pegg as Arthur Weasley
  • Ruth Wilson as Bellatrix Lestrange
  • Leo Woodall as Bill Weasley
  • Ambika Mod as Nymphadora Tonks
  • Gemma Whelan as Professor Sprout
  • Matt Berry as Sir Cadogan.

Among all of them, I find McAvoy, Pegg, Wilson, and Berry particularly exceptional for the live-action remake’s roles. Berry, although minor, is a comedic mastermind, and his witty voice acting would perfectly capture Cadogan’s over-the-top bravery and impulsiveness, making him even more hilarious as comic relief. The other three candidates are equally impressive, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else taking on those roles so convincingly.

As a fellow movie enthusiast, I’d say Pegg would be perfect for Arthur Weasley! He’s got this effortless charm combined with a touch of quirkiness that makes him an ideal fit. The actor portraying him should embody the essence of an ordinary guy, yet bring a genuine excitement towards Muggle-related stuff, striking the right balance between endearing and not annoying. Simon Pegg has exactly that kind of charisma! Plus, having him team up with his buddy Nick Frost (who’s playing Hagrid), even if they don’t have many shared scenes, would add an extra layer of fun to the movie.

In another scenario, McAvoy is an actor who effortlessly fits into various roles. He could convincingly play Lockhart with ease or a tormented Lupin, but he truly excels at Mad-Eye. This character demands a robust intensity combined with a peculiar charm that audiences can’t help but embrace. McAvoy has demonstrated his ability to portray such complexity throughout his career, with his warmth being evident in numerous projects since his time in the Narnia series. His performance in Split showcases his versatility as an actor capable of embodying all facets of Moody.

In an especially thrilling turn of events, McAvoy’s “His Dark Materials” co-star, Wilson, is a strong contender for the role of Bellatrix. While Helena Bonham Carter has been impressive in the past, Wilson fits the part exceptionally well. Through her performances in shows like “His Dark Materials” and “Luther”, she’s demonstrated an uncanny ability to portray complex characters that venture into deeply chilling, dark, and even sadistic territories. Should one be searching for an actress capable of capturing the malevolent insanity of Bellatrix, Wilson would undoubtedly be a top pick.

The issue here is that by agreeing to play these characters in an Audible series, there might be less chance for them to appear in the TV remake. While Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger in both formats and the audio-only nature of the audiobook eliminates any confusing on-screen double casting, it remains to be seen if actors would want to perform the same roles twice across different mediums. On the other hand, HBO bringing back Warwick Davis as Flitwick could mean that there might not be a problem for all the actors. However, these actors have the potential to shine in their live-action roles and could be difficult to replace.

The re-make of Harry Potter is presently being filmed, with a scheduled release slated for both HBO and HBO Max in the year 2027.
