From the very start, the X-Men comics have showcased incredibly powerful characters in the Marvel Universe. Professor X was the strongest telepath around, and Magneto, though not yet at his full potential, was already a formidable opponent. Over the years, we’ve met even more powerful mutants like the Living Tribunal, Storm, Jean Grey (who became the Phoenix), Legion, Jamie Braddock, Magik, and Iceman, who ascended to godlike status. Mutant power levels have steadily increased, making it difficult to definitively name the *most* powerful. Characters like Storm and Magneto can manipulate energy, while Jamie Braddock and Proteus can alter reality itself, and Jean Grey is a cosmic entity. But now, a mutant is returning who could potentially dwarf even these powerhouses.
The first issue of *X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha* ends with a significant arrival: characters from the *Age of Apocalypse* universe are now in the main Marvel universe. The first person they encounter is a familiar face for fans of the original 1995 *Age of Apocalypse* storyline – X-Man. In that alternate reality, X-Man was essentially the version of Cable, created by Mister Sinister as a weapon against Apocalypse. He escaped his universe by defeating Holocaust, Apocalypse’s son, and both ended up in the main Marvel universe (known as 616). Before the emergence of the X-Men’s most powerful Omega-level mutants, X-Man was considered the strongest mutant ever, and his subsequent actions proved that reputation. But his return raises a question: is there more to his arrival than meets the eye?
X-Man Took a Winding Road Through the Marvel Universe

Many fans forget that Cable was originally destined to be the most powerful mutant ever born. He wasn’t born with the techno-organic virus; that came later. Cable’s parents were Cyclops and a clone of Jean Grey named Madelyne Pryor, and their combination resulted in a child with incredible psychic abilities. X-Man, created from the actual DNA of Cyclops and Jean, didn’t have the virus and therefore had full access to his powers. He arrived in the main Marvel universe in his own comic series, X-Men Omega, and later encountered Madelyne Pryor, whom he unknowingly resurrected. Together, they tried to avoid the X-Men. X-Man fought villains like the X-Cutioner, Holocast, and Exodus in visually stunning issues drawn by Steve Skroce. Eventually, the villain Sinister got involved, but X-Man escaped with his assistant, Threnody. They ended up in New York City, where X-Man befriended Spider-Man (Skroce even briefly worked on The Amazing Spider-Man, creating some fantastic artwork) and became a local hero in lower Manhattan, often seen in Washington Square Park. The powerful being Onslaught captured him, recognizing his immense potential alongside Franklin Richards. At this point, X-Man was considered equally powerful as Franklin, who would later create an entire universe. Unfortunately, the 1990s weren’t kind to X-Man. He was captured by Apocalypse and used as part of a plan to become a god. His comic series ended in 2000 with the “Counter X” storyline, where he transformed into a shaman dedicated to saving the world, ultimately succeeding and sacrificing himself to save Earth.
The character X-Man eventually returned, facing off against the Dark X-Men and Dark Avengers. After years of having his powers drained by villains to open dimensional portals, he joined the New Mutants with weakened abilities. By the end of 2018, he became the central villain in the “X-Men Disassembled” storyline. His powers were fully restored, and he aimed to reshape the world by creating a parallel reality. He gained control of Legion’s abilities and used their combined power to build his own universe, explored in *Age of X-Man*. This new world was a seemingly perfect utopia, but relied on strict emotional control. The X-Men eventually regained their memories and persuaded him to return them to their original universe. Nate, however, remained behind. His appearance in *X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha* #1 resembles his original form from the early *X-Man* series, a significant change from his last appearance. Combined with the arrival of the AoA X-Men, who believe *their* universe is the true one, this sets the stage for a potentially exciting new direction in the story.
Will X-Man Doom the 616 Marvel Universe?

Looking at X-Man’s history, it’s clear he’s a mutant with the power to change reality itself. He’s even created his own universe and opened doorways to other dimensions. This immense power could be central to the story’s main conflict. In the Age of Apocalypse storyline, Mister Sinister believed their universe was the primary one and needed to be restored, but it was revealed this was part of a sinister plan with Holocaust. It’s possible Forge’s machine, built while he was working with Sinister, brought the X-Men to X-Man intentionally – to replace the main 616 universe with the Age of Apocalypse universe.
The villains’ goal might be to persuade X-Man that their reality is the original one. If they succeed, they could convince him to use his immense power to replace the main timeline with the Age of Apocalypse universe. This could be the hidden purpose behind Sinister’s manipulations of the X-Men, and it would create a very complex situation. It also raises questions about *when* the Age of Apocalypse X-Men arrived – perhaps they traveled back in time to a vulnerable X-Man, newly confused about his origins? This storyline has a lot of potential, and it will be exciting to see how it develops.
