Also in the running are *The Studio*, *The Pitt*, and Hulu’s *Only Murders in the Building* and *The Bear*. The 10 Weirdest Ways Actors Were Written Off of TV Shows
1. Charlie Sheen, Two and a Half Men
After Charlie Sheen was fired from *Two and a Half Men* due to controversial public statements about the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre, the writers needed to explain his character, Charlie Harper’s, disappearance. They decided Charlie died while on his honeymoon in Paris. The story was that after being caught cheating on his new wife, Rose (Melanie Lynskey), he fell onto the subway tracks and was hit by a train in a gruesome accident. But the story didn’t end there! Charlie reappeared as a ghost haunting Kathy Bates’ character, and later, in the series finale, it was revealed he had been alive all along, held captive in Rose’s basement. He planned to kill everyone, but was ultimately crushed by a falling piano.
2. George Clooney, ER
I remember when *ER* really launched George Clooney’s career. He clearly caught the film bug pretty quickly and decided to pursue Hollywood full-time. The writers crafted a really intense storyline for his exit – his character, Dr. Doug Ross, ended up resigning from the hospital after a huge scandal. Basically, he helped a mother give her terminally ill child a fatal dose of pain medication by showing her how to override the machine’s locks. It led to criminal charges, though the hospital’s head of genetics defended him. Ultimately, he had to resign and move to Seattle. It was great to see him come back for a guest appearance in Season 6, and even for a story arc during the show’s final season. It felt like a proper send-off.
3. Heidi Swedberg, Seinfeld
Heidi Swedberg played Susan Ross on *Seinfeld*, George Costanza’s often-tumultuous girlfriend. Her job at NBC was frequently threatened by their relationship, which happened while George and Jerry were creating their sitcom. They were engaged for the entire seventh season, but George eventually tried to break it off to pursue Marisa Tomei. Susan remained determined to marry him until the season finale, “The Invitations,” where she tragically died after accidentally ingesting poison from the cheap glue on their wedding invitations. George immediately tried to date Tomei, but she had lost interest.
4. Isaac Hayes, South Park
The characters in *South Park* often went to Jerome “Chef” McElroy for advice, but he faced a difficult situation when it came to the departure of his voice actor, Isaac Hayes. Hayes had publicly stated he disagreed with the show’s jokes about Scientology, a religion he belonged to, and this was believed to be the reason he left. (Later, his son suggested Hayes’s team made the decision for him while he was recovering from a stroke in the hospital.)
When the show returned for its tenth season in the episode “The Return of Chef,” it was revealed that Chef had joined a group similar to Scientology before being killed in a bizarre and violent series of events, including being burned, impaled, and attacked by a bear and a mountain lion.
5. Lee Norris, Boy Meets World
Lee Norris played Stuart Minkus, the quirky and intelligent student, on *Boy Meets World*. Minkus was known for his distinctive look-a bowl cut, glasses, and a large water gun. He appeared throughout the first season, but mysteriously vanished after the season finale, “I Dream of Feeny.” The episode playfully suggested Cory and Shawn used their psychic powers to make Minkus disappear instead of turning on a lightbulb, and it worked! He wasn’t seen again until the fifth season’s “Graduation” episode, where it was revealed he had simply been transferred to a different class.
6. Nina Dobrev, The Vampire Diaries
Although fans guessed there was trouble behind the scenes, Nina Dobrev and the show’s creators always said she intended to leave *The Vampire Diaries* after six seasons. However, her character, Elena Gilbert, needed a proper exit. In the Season 6 finale, a villain named Kai attacked a wedding, harming several characters and putting Elena into a magical sleep. This spell linked Elena’s life to her friend Bonnie – as long as Bonnie lived, Elena would remain asleep with no way to wake up. This was a sad ending for Elena and Damon’s complicated relationship, and a surprising twist that fans didn’t anticipate for such a major character.
7. Roseanne Barr, Roseanne
When the beloved 90s sitcom *Roseanne* returned in 2018 after over two decades, fans were thrilled. However, the revival was short-lived. Just months after the show was renewed for an eleventh season, Roseanne Barr, the show’s star, was fired due to a racist tweet she posted about Valerie Jarrett, a former advisor to Barack Obama. Unable to continue with the original name, the show was rebranded as *The Conners*. The first episode of *The Conners* revealed that Roseanne Conner had died from an opioid overdose, and explored how her family dealt with the news and the fact that she had been struggling with drug addiction for years.
8. Shannen Doherty, Charmed
There are different stories about why Shannen Doherty left *Charmed*. Some say she quit because of conflicts with her co-stars or the show’s creator, Aaron Spelling, while others claim she was fired due to issues off-camera. Over time, the explanations have varied, but everyone agrees she departed the show unexpectedly.
Her character, Prue Halliwell, one of the three witch sisters, seemingly died at the end of the third season. The storyline involved a complicated time travel plot where she was killed by a demon sent by the show’s main villain. The episode left viewers wondering what happened, and it wasn’t until the beginning of Season 4 that they learned Prue was truly gone. Her character was then replaced by Rose McGowan’s Paige Matthews.
9. Travis Fimmel, Vikings
Travis Fimmel, who played Ragnar Lothbrok in the show *Vikings*, was originally only meant to appear in the first season. The character’s story was supposed to end with his death in the finale. However, the show’s creator, Michael Hirst, changed his mind and kept Fimmel on for four seasons. Ragnar ultimately meets a brutal end in England. He’s captured by King Aelle, tortured, and then thrown into a pit of poisonous snakes, where he dies. In a fitting end for a Viking king, the god Odin appears to Ragnar’s sons to tell them of their father’s death and that he’s waiting for them in Valhalla.
10. T.R. Knight, Grey’s Anatomy
Throughout its 20 seasons, *Grey’s Anatomy* is known for unexpectedly killing off characters, and it seems no one is truly safe-with the possible exception of Meredith Grey. However, the death of George O’Malley, played by T.R. Knight, remains one of the show’s most debated moments. In the Season 5 finale, George tells his colleagues he’s leaving the hospital to become a trauma surgeon in the army, and shares emotional goodbyes. Shortly after, an unidentified patient arrives at the E.R. after being hit by a bus while trying to save a woman. Meredith eventually recognizes the patient as George when he writes “007”-a nickname of his-on her hand. He dies during surgery at the start of Season 6. T.R. Knight has stated his departure stemmed from disagreements over his character’s limited screen time and his decision to publicly come out as gay.
