Okay, so you will NOT believe this! It’s been a year since I first saw him wearing that incredible necklace – a tiny replica of his *knee*! I was obsessed, of course. And now he *finally* explained it! Apparently, he had both kneecaps removed during surgery, and then… then he had them turned into jewelry! Can you even imagine?! It’s so… him. Just utterly, brilliantly him. I need one. Seriously.

In his new documentary short, Touched By Gold, Elton John shared that after having both kneecaps removed – first the left, then the right – he surprisingly asked his surgeon if he could keep them, a request that apparently took the surgeon by surprise, according to a clip published by Us Weekly on September 15th.

The 78-year-old patient shared that his surgeon told him he had the most severely damaged knees he’d ever seen. He described a hole in his kneecap, jokingly comparing it to an ancient Egyptian artifact.

He asked jewelry designer Theo Fennell to create something beautiful from his old kneecaps, giving him complete creative freedom. Fennell then carefully dried the kneecaps – a process he described as “baking” – to make them easier to work with as jewelry materials. We later presented the finished pieces at the BFI London Film Festival last October.

Elton pointed out that the designer cleverly crafted the necklace chain from bones to complement the kneecap pendant. The back of the pendant features a Latin inscription meaning “I will no longer bow to any man,” a phrase Theo apparently said one couldn’t utter “with a kneecap missing.”

Theo crafted Elton John’s removed kneecap into a brooch. Elton believes both the kneecap and the previous piece created from his removed tooth will remain treasured items for years to come.

As he said, “I honestly think these are timeless pieces that will last for centuries.”

Elton John, who is a father to Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12, with his husband David Furnish, has publicly discussed his health challenges and been forthcoming about the problems he’s been facing.

He admitted at last year’s New York Film Festival that he’s had a lot of organs removed. ‘I’ve lost my tonsils, adenoids, appendix, and even my prostate,’ he said.

As he said, “I honestly think these are timeless pieces that will last for centuries.”
