Stephen Colbert is celebrating the right now.
That’s why he’s putting his future plans-what he’ll do after his talk show ends in May 2026-on hold for now.
Stephen, 61, revealed he plans to retire in May. Speaking to reporters after winning his first Outstanding Talk Series award on September 14th, he said he intends to enjoy the remaining time and finish strong. He explained he’s fully focused on making his exit a success and has no other priorities right now.
He expressed his enthusiasm for the work, saying he’s excited to spend the next nine months collaborating with his colleagues, working hard and enjoying the process. He emphasized that the show is a team effort, created for and with each other daily, and he feels honored to share their work with the audience. He genuinely loves what he does.
Stephen Colbert’s final show was a celebratory event, coming just two months after CBS announced the end of The Late Show after ten years with him as host – a decision the network attributed to financial reasons. Although the show was ending, the audience at the Peacock Theater clearly showed how popular Stephen still is, giving him several standing ovations throughout the broadcast.
Stephen described the experience as wonderful. He shared that he used to come to the area often when he was younger and searching for jobs, and that receiving this award, with the audience giving him a standing ovation, felt much better than surviving the stressful ‘pilot season’ in television. He expressed deep gratitude, emphasizing that the recognition wasn’t just for him, but for everyone who works hard daily to make things happen. He found the whole experience incredibly rewarding and humbling.
Stephen was surprised by the enthusiastic applause, but his wife of 32 years, Evelyn McGee-Colbert, or “Evie” as she’s known, felt it was well-deserved and a long time in the making.
Evie shared with Zuri Hall on the red carpet at *Live From TopMob: 2025 Emmys* what she appreciates about her husband: his strong leadership and compassionate approach. She described a close-knit team of around 200 people who genuinely care for one another, emphasizing that the supportive and collaborative work environment is something you’d only truly understand by being a part of it.

Oh my gosh, the performances this year were incredible! I was totally captivated by Kathy Bates in *Matlock*, and Sharon Horgan was just brilliant in *Bad Sisters*. As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been keeping a close eye on what people are watching, and right now, there’s a real fascination with authentic, feel-good stories. We’re seeing that with shows like *America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders*, but the big winner lately is definitely *Love On The Spectrum* – it’s just incredibly heartwarming. Beyond that, audiences are drawn to behind-the-scenes glimpses into unique worlds – think *RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked*, *The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives*, and the inspiring community focus of *Welcome to Wrexham*. It’s all about connection and seeing different sides of life, and those shows really deliver.
