Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel Reveal Is Disappointing for 2 Classic Characters Everyone Wants To See

The next Super Mario movie, coming in April 2026, will be called *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*. This suggests the film will take Mario and friends to outer space, drawing inspiration from the popular 2007 *Super Mario Galaxy* video game. It’s a big change from the first movie, which was a fantasy adventure, and promises a sci-fi experience for audiences. Considering how important Yoshi was in *Super Mario Galaxy 2*, many fans believe this new film will continue the story hinted at in the first movie’s after-credits scene, finally bringing Yoshi into the action.

Sadly, it looks like fans hoping to see Wario and Waluigi in the new *Super Mario Galaxy Movie* will be disappointed. It’s unlikely these two classic Mario characters will make their first big-screen appearance in this space-themed adventure.

Where Are Wario & Waluigi?

Wario first appeared in the 1992 game *Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins*. It took until the year 2000 and the game *Mario Tennis* for Luigi’s rival, Waluigi, to join the Mario universe. Both characters have become fan favorites worldwide. Wario has starred in his own games, and Waluigi is a popular figure online, enjoyed both seriously and as a meme. They’ve both been featured in many *Mario* games, including the *Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games* series.

Wario and Waluigi weren’t included in *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, which wasn’t unexpected considering other popular characters like Yoshi and Birdo were also left out. Now, with the sequel planned to be based on *Super Mario Galaxy*, it seems unlikely they’ll appear. The *Galaxy* games heavily feature Bowser as the main villain and focus on space-themed storylines, leaving little room for new characters like Wario and Waluigi. It’s hard to imagine the second movie will have time for them with all the new sci-fi elements being introduced.

Even though fans and actors like Jack Black have expressed interest in seeing Wario appear in a future movie-with Jack Black even suggesting Pedro Pascal as the voice-the filmmakers aren’t currently planning to include him. Wario is a major and long-standing enemy of Mario, but for now, the creators of *The Super Mario Bros. Movie* franchise aren’t focusing on adding him to the story.

Wario & Waluigi Reflect Illumination Playing The Long Game With Mario Movies

Illumination is clearly planning a long-term future for Mario movies. *The Super Mario Bros. Movie* was a huge success in 2023, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time, proving Mario’s enduring popularity. This success likely motivated Illumination and Nintendo to build a lasting franchise, unlike some other animated series that quickly fade away. Holding back characters like Wario and Waluigi for a future movie, like *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*, suggests they want to ensure there are plenty of stories and characters left to explore beyond just a couple of films. They don’t want to use up all the fan favorites too quickly.

If the new *Super Mario Galaxy* movie does even a small part as well at the box office as *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, we can expect more sequels. It’s likely future films will focus on introducing Wario and Waluigi, potentially with a whole movie dedicated to them instead of just appearing alongside characters from the *Super Mario Galaxy* universe. However, even if that happens, dedicated Wario and Waluigi fans might still be disappointed that it’s taking so long for these villains to join Mario on the big screen.
