It appears that the recently launched game “The Alters” has been quite successful, particularly in terms of critical acclaim. However, it has also become a topic of discussion due to certain findings within its files. Players have detected that aspects such as the creation of some portrait icons and even some localization in “The Alters” may have utilized Language Model-based AI.
One user has pointed out that there’s quite a bit of text in the background that appears to be prompts usually given to a large language model (LLM) to generate certain responses. Another user noticed that some parts of the Portuguese version of the game seem to have been translated using an LLM as well.

Loc’d and Loaded’s game localization expert Lucile Danilov has shared her personal perspective about The Alters and its apparent application of LLMs for localization. In a post on LinkedIn, Danilov expressed that, although it’s an excellent game, the presence of AI prompts within the game is “regrettable.
In simpler terms, Danilov expressed his displeasure about finding untranslated parts in an AI prompt, stating that this oversight is particularly disappointing given the importance of the storyline in the game. He also mentioned that there are errors and inaccuracies in the Brazilian Portuguese translation provided, which he finds unacceptable.
In response to Danilov’s post, video game translator Handong Ryu disclosed that the Korean edition of “The Alters” encountered a similar predicament as well.
As a devoted fan, I’m compelled to share my findings: The same problem persists in the Korean version too, which lends credence to the second scenario you suggested. Upon closer inspection, it appears that the same part of the Korean localization bears the unmistakable marks of having been processed through an LLM (Language Learning Model), without the necessary post-editing.
It’s quite disappointing to see strong opposition from the Korean gaming community, mainly because the source of their criticism lies in an aspect of the game that was beyond my influence.
Although there is additional incriminating information within the game, it’s mostly hidden details that require special effort to uncover. There are text scrolls where you can still observe the AI’s responses before it delves into a lot of technical terminology. Considering everything, they’ve skillfully avoided revealing crucial details.
