Although Sony hasn’t officially announced it, reports are true: a new base PS5 model with less storage is now available in Europe. The updated digital edition now has an 825GB SSD instead of the original 1TB. This change is reportedly a way to avoid raising the console’s price.
Billbil-Kun noticed that newer versions of the console are being shipped with updated packaging. This packaging now indicates the console has 825GB of storage for games, saved data, and other media.
A new version of the PlayStation 5, reportedly called the ‘Chassis E’ series, is returning to the original storage capacity of 825GB – the same amount it launched with. Later models offered 1TB of storage, but this new version, available in Europe, has reduced that. This change comes after the PS5 has seen two price increases since its 2020 release, mirroring similar price hikes for the Xbox Series X|S and the original Nintendo Switch.
Unlike most consoles that get cheaper over time, the PlayStation 5 has actually become more expensive. Sony explains these price increases are due to difficult economic conditions.
Reports suggest you might be getting a less powerful PS5, and it could cost you more – a disappointing outcome for many.
