As a critic, I’ve been following the story of *Dexter* for years, and it’s fascinating to hear from Clyde Phillips, the creator of *Original Sin*, about the show’s original ending. He’s pretty blunt about it – Paramount+ really dropped the ball. Despite *Dexter: New Blood* being a success, they killed off Dexter Morgan, essentially shutting down a potential franchise. It’s wild to think they then explored spin-offs – a show about Harrison after his father’s death, a prequel about the Trinity Killer, and even a Dexter origin story, *Original Sin*. Thankfully, *Original Sin* actually happened and became a major hit, proving there was still a huge appetite for the *Dexter* universe.
Showtime initially planned a series called ‘Harrison,’ but it was canceled when Michael C. Hall suggested bringing back his character, Dexter, in ‘Dexter: Resurrection.’ A potential show about the Trinity Killer has been delayed. However, ‘Original Sin’ quickly became very popular on Showtime, leading many to believe it had a bright future. In April, Paramount renewed ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ for a second season, and most people expected production to start after the first season of ‘Resurrection’ finished.
Dexter: Original Sin Creator Says He’s “Not Happy” About Show’s Cancellation
The new Dexter: Original Sin series was unexpectedly cancelled in August following a company merger with Skydance. Clyde Phillips, the showrunner and creator, recently spoke publicly for the first time since Dexter: Resurrection began, appearing on the Dissecting Dexter podcast. He openly shared his frustration with how the cancellation happened and clarified that Original Sin had, in fact, already been renewed for a second season before it was cancelled.
Phillips recalled receiving a difficult phone call that night, learning the show had been canceled after he’d already told the writers and actors it was moving forward. To make matters worse, the network simultaneously picked up another show, *Resurrection*, which wasn’t unexpected. Phillips felt the whole situation was poorly managed and expressed his dissatisfaction with how it was handled.
He’s touched and proud that fans are trying to revive *Dexter: Original Sin*, but he doubts Paramount will reconsider their decision. Phillips explained that before the company merged with Skydance, previous leaders envisioned a *Yellowstonestyle franchise built around *Dexter*, with Phillips playing a role similar to *Yellowstone*’s creator, Taylor Sheridan. They had extensive plans for the future of the series, including bringing the character Doakes into *Original Sin* and exploring the backstories of Harry, Dexter, and even Brian Moser in more detail.
Phillips explained that a series focusing on the Trinity Killer is probably not going to happen now that Paramount has cancelled *Dexter: Original Sin*. The focus seems to be shifting towards continuing *Dexter: Resurrection*, which is the most popular part of the *Dexter* universe. Hopefully, this will reassure fans that the show has a future.
