EA Sports FC 26 is completely revamping the way the game plays, based on feedback from its community. Here are 15 key things to know before you decide to buy it.
Two New Gameplay Presets
FC 26 introduces two new ways to play: Competitive and Authentic. These modes are tailored to different playstyles and where you play the game. Competitive mode prioritizes quick reactions and precise control, ideal for online experiences like Clubs and Ultimate Team. Authentic mode focuses on realism and a more natural pace, best suited for offline modes like Career Mode. EA Sports hopes these options will better match what players want from the game.
Refined Gameplay Fundamentals
This year, EA Sports focused on one main goal: improving how the game *plays*. They listened to players and fixed many issues that have bothered them for a long time. They’ve completely reworked the basics of the game – things like dribbling, passing, shooting, tackling, and how goalkeepers perform. They also made the game feel more realistic with improvements to player physicality and the speed of the match, and they’re confident these changes will address problems found in previous versions.
Dribbling Reworks
FC 26 features a major update to dribbling, making players feel more agile and responsive with and without the ball. The new Dynamic Dribbling system offers improved control and consistency, with adjustments to how players touch the ball and use their preferred foot. Updated animations, including quicker jogging and tighter turns, make movement more realistic. The game now also accounts for player height, ensuring balanced performance for players of all sizes. These changes combine to create a more authentic and fluid dribbling experience.
Re-evaluated Movement
Based on player feedback that movement felt slow and clunky, FC 26 now features much faster acceleration and tighter turning. We’ve also updated running animations to look more realistic. Top players will now feel noticeably quicker, and the speed difference between attackers and defenders has been adjusted for better gameplay balance. We’ve simplified acceleration types to just three, making player movements more consistent and predictable.
Smarter Goalkeepers
Many *FC* players have been frustrated with the goalkeepers in the game, citing issues like bad positioning, weak saves, and unnatural movements. EA Sports is addressing these concerns with several improvements. Goalkeepers will now have better control when deflecting shots and a more realistic ability to save them by predicting where the ball is going. Their positioning will also be smarter, thanks to new AI technology that helps them move intelligently within the goal.
New PlayStyles
To address concerns about unbalanced gameplay in *FC 25*, *EA Sports FC 26* is updating its PlayStyles. This includes refining existing styles, adding completely new ones, and combining elements of older styles. New PlayStyles let players excel in areas like winning headers (*Aerial Fortress* and *Precision Header*), creative playmaking (*Inventive*), physical dominance (*Enforcer*), and spectacular finishing (*Game Changer*). The *Game Changer* style, for example, builds upon the features previously found in the *Flair* PlayStyle.
More Community-Led New Features
With accessibility improvements based on player feedback, *FC 26* is striving to raise the bar for inclusivity in yearly sports games. EA partnered with the Accessibility Design Council to create a High Contrast mode that makes it easier for players with visual impairments to follow the game. This mode includes options to adjust color saturation, customize team colors, change the appearance of referees and the ball, toggle shadows, and improve subtitles. High Contrast mode will also be usable in player-versus-player matches.
New Player Roles
In *FC 26*, we’re adding four new Player Roles – Ball-Playing Keeper, Wide Back, Inverted Wingback, and Box Crasher – to give you even more ways to customize your tactics beyond standard formations. These roles work alongside the existing ones, making the whole system more flexible and allowing attacking players greater freedom to move around the field. We’re also introducing a new Focus called ‘Versatile’ which can be added to Fullback, Classic 10, Winger, Poacher, and Advanced Forward roles to further enhance this freedom. Plus, ten more Focuses are coming for existing roles, all designed to add versatility – think wingbacks who roam freely, midfielders who win the ball all over the pitch, and false 9s making runs into the box from deep.
Redefined Manager Career
To give players more interesting and varied challenges in Career Mode, *FC 26* is adding Manager Live Career. This new feature is a constantly updated system with challenges and scenarios that change throughout the season, both weekly and monthly. These challenges will sometimes be based on real-world football events, like important Champions League matches or the busy transfer window.
New Archetypes
In FC 26, we’re introducing Player Archetypes to create a more rewarding way to build your player’s career. Based on thirteen legendary football players, these Archetypes let you unlock unique abilities and develop your career to match your preferred playstyle, offering a level of personalization and strategy never before seen in a football simulation.
Signature Perks
EA Sports FC 26 introduces Signature Perks, which are special abilities linked to a player’s Archetype and their unique Specialization. Since Specializations are specific to each Archetype, players can already focus on their strengths – for example, a physically strong player might specialize in strength and positioning. Signature Perks take this further by temporarily boosting attributes to match a preferred playstyle. These perks fall into three categories: those triggered by actions, those based on gameplay mechanics, and those that benefit the whole team.
Changes to FUT
Football Ultimate Team is getting a big update, based on what players have been asking for. The changes will improve how the game feels, giving you more control and consistent results. Rivals and Champs are being updated, and there’s a fix for when opponents leave during tied matches to reduce frustration. Plus, a new feature called Live Events is being added, offering unique match types and challenges, along with new Tournament and Gauntlet formats.
Rivals Revamp
Details about the updated Rivals mode in FC 26 are still being finalized, but it’s clear EA wants the experience to be more engaging and rewarding for players of all abilities, regardless of whether they win or lose. A new feature called Bounties will appear during matches – for example, scoring the final goal or preventing the opposing team from scoring. Completing these Bounties provides rewards, giving players something to aim for even if they don’t win. Duels also add a competitive element, with the Bounty shared between players, meaning only one can claim it. Finally, a new system of Limited Checkpoints will adjust a player’s skill level more quickly based on losses, so they won’t have to wait until the end of the season to be placed at the right level.
Quality of Life Improvements
FC 26 includes many improvements to make the game more enjoyable. Match importance now better reflects how crucial a game is, influencing team formations. Players will also recover from poor performance more realistically. The user interface has been refined with features like indicators for out-of-position players, better views of player actions, and quick access to tactics. A new visual chart simplifies understanding team tactics. Overall, FC 26 offers a smoother and more intuitive experience in both gameplay and career mode.
Ultimate Edition Pre-Order Bonuses
The EA Sports FC 26 Ultimate Edition includes several perks: Switch players get 4500 FC Points, while others receive 6000. It also adds an extra FUT EVO slot, the Season 1 Premium Pass, and lets you start playing up to seven days early, beginning September 19th. If you pre-order, you’ll also receive three bonus items: a special EVO item to improve shooting, an ICON player, and a chance to pick an ICON player with a guaranteed overall rating of 93+.
