Chase Chrisley is opening up about starting his sobriety journey.
Todd Chrisley, known from the show *Chrisley Knows Best*, has entered a rehabilitation facility to address his challenges with alcohol.
Chase, 29, was visibly emotional on the September 16th episode of *The Chrisley’s: Back to Reality*, speaking through tears while on a plane with his father, Todd Chrisley, and girlfriend, Jodi Laine Fournerat. He explained that he needed time to deal with past trauma he’d been suppressing, admitting he’d hoped he could simply ignore it and move on.
Chase Chrisley, creator of The Chase Chrisley Collection, shared that he was nervous about starting treatment, explaining that he needs to rediscover who he is.
Following his son’s announcement, Todd-who shares children Savannah, 28, and Grayson, 19, and is a grandfather to 11-year-old Chloe with his wife, Julie Chrisley-offered his son some supportive words.
The family patriarch told his son he didn’t want to be remembered for his 28 months in prison, a sentence he received – and was later forgiven for – after being convicted of federal tax evasion. He also emphasized that his son didn’t have to be defined by his struggles with alcohol and substance abuse. He explained that these were just parts of his life, not the whole story – a single chapter, not the entire book.
Todd, who shares Lindsie, 36, and Kyle, 34, with his former wife Teresa Terry, said he felt more equipped to help Chase because he had already supported his oldest son through addiction.
After leaving Chase at the facility, Todd admitted, “Going through everything with Kyle was incredibly difficult, but it might have actually prepared me for this. It’s heartbreaking to have to bring your son to rehab, and it’s just as painful leaving for my trip knowing he’s not here with me.”
“Even though we’ve been through a lot,” he added. “I truly believe that God did not bring us this far to drop this off and that God will keep a protective edge around my son and the healing hand on him at all times. It’s because that’s what I pray for all of my children every day and every night.”
Despite his father’s support, Chase’s difficulties strained his relationship with his sister, Savannah, and led him to miss the family’s first television interview after their parents were released from prison.
After being in the program for a while, Chase apologized to the host of the *Unlocked* podcast, hoping they could rebuild their friendship.
“I’m so incredibly proud of you,” Chase told Savannah over Zoom. “I’m really grateful for everything you did and how responsibly you handled things, because honestly, I was really struggling at the time.”
Savannah admitted she felt responsible for keeping her family stable while her parents were incarcerated, and Chase promised to step up and support her.
With tears in his eyes, he told his sister, “I can be there for you from today forward, though I can’t undo the past. I’m so sorry, Savannah, and I love you.”
Accepting her brother’s apology, Savannah declared, “I love you, and I’m here if you need me.”
She told me she was proud of the progress I’d made. She said I’ve always been capable, and she’s happy to see me pursuing my potential and working hard.
Ultimately, Chase decided to get sober in March because he wanted to be fully present for his family.
Chase explained in a recent conversation that time is more valuable than money because you can’t get it back. Because of this, he chooses not to waste energy on minor disagreements. He believes that family is the most important thing in life, as they’re the people who truly matter.

After the Backstreet Boys member relapsed in 2021, he noted he “got sober again for the last time.”
He told *People* magazine in July 2025 that he’s committed to staying on his current path. He described it as a daily effort, but shared that following advice from the recovery community has dramatically improved his life.
While AJ acknowledged he is “still learning, still growing,” he’s now confident in who he is.
You know, I’ve been doing a lot of self-work lately, and it’s been incredibly freeing. I’m finally learning to set healthy boundaries – something I really struggled with before. It’s a total game-changer! I also realized I have different sides to my personality. There’s ‘AJ,’ a kind of public persona, but that doesn’t fully capture who I am. At the core, I’m Alexander James, and that’s the real me I’m embracing.
I was so thrilled to see that back in October 2018, the actor from *American Pie* shared that he’d been sober for a year! He posted about it on Instagram, and it was such a positive and inspiring message.
He shared that he first attempted to stop drinking and using drugs more than five years ago, when his addiction became overwhelming. He admitted it was a very difficult process.
He shared that after a difficult journey, he’s been sober for a year, and he’s incredibly proud of this accomplishment. He encouraged anyone who is struggling to reach out for help, reminding them that there’s no shame in asking and that recovery is possible.
Looking back on his battle with addiction, he thought about how far he’d gone to keep it a secret.
He shared on his wife Jenny Mollen’s podcast, *All the Fails*, that he was in therapy but still struggling. He described a cycle where he’d leave a productive therapy session and immediately go buy a bottle of vodka, drink it, and then drive home. He admitted he knew how to drink enough to disconnect from his life and avoid difficult emotions.
He explained that he’d carefully planned how much he’d drink, making sure he stayed coherent enough to talk. He mentioned he was constantly refilling the bottles at the bar to manage his intake.
The two-time World Cup-winning soccer player has publicly discussed using Adderall improperly while recovering from injuries during her time playing college soccer.
She shared on the 2025 podcast *Question Everything with Danielle Robay* that she had become seriously addicted to Adderall and was using it improperly. She explained she was taking it constantly, often going days without sleep. It was a chaotic period, and she worried she was damaging her health – she felt like she was pushing her body too far. She admitted to taking the drug by crushing and snorting it, describing her behavior as deeply problematic.
However, in the midst of her struggle, her college coach Anson Dorrance was there to support her.
She described a difficult time where she had to adapt significantly. Anson encouraged her to read, and she discovered a book called *Man’s Search for Meaning*. It helped her understand and cope with suffering, and she said it profoundly changed her perspective on life.
The Valley star shared his decades-long battle with drugs in March 2025 after going to rehab.
Jax revealed in a recent episode of Bravo’s *Hot Mic* podcast that he’s struggling with addiction, specifically with cocaine. He admitted it was difficult to talk about.
He explained that he’s been struggling with this issue intermittently since he was 23, and now, at 45, it continues. He’d sometimes stop the behavior, but then other times he’d engage in it intensely.
Jax stopped drinking and using cocaine at the same time. He explained that while he wasn’t sure he had a serious drinking problem, he always drank when he used cocaine, so he decided to quit both. He’s proud to have been sober for over 82 days – the longest stretch of his life without either substance.
Tom Holland, known for his role in *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, quit drinking in 2022 because he felt controlled by alcohol. He admitted on the *On Purpose with Jay Shetty* podcast that he was addicted and believes that having a drink every day could indicate a problem.
The actor explained that you eventually get to the point where you regret having one too many drinks. Then, you wake up with a really bad headache.
After adopting a new lifestyle, Holland found that he slept more soundly and was better equipped to deal with challenges.
He explained that he was much calmer and more able to handle problems on set. He felt mentally clear, healthier, and in better physical shape.
Sean Connery, known for his role in *Hunt for Red October*, rarely discusses his decades-long struggle with and recovery from alcoholism, a journey that started nearly forty years ago.
He revealed in a May 2024 podcast interview that he doesn’t often talk about his sobriety, but mentions it occasionally when relevant. He shared that he’s been sober for 39 years, since February 23, 1985.
Alec described his early years in Los Angeles after leaving New York in 1983 as a period of intense struggle with cocaine addiction. He admitted to using a massive amount of the drug, saying it felt as commonplace as drinking coffee at the time, and that many people were using it constantly. He described a daily battle with addiction for about two years.
And after quitting the drug, he soon turned to alcohol—only to also quit that dependency.
Today, he relies on the city around him.
He finds New York City incredibly calming. He loves simply walking around and discovering new details he’s never noticed before – like interesting features on buildings he’s passed countless times. He also really enjoys spending time with friends over lunch or coffee.
In April 2024, Anne Hathaway, known for her role in *The Princess Diaries*, revealed she’s been sober for over five years. She told *The New York Times* that reaching this point feels like a significant achievement.
She explained her decision simply. “I realized I didn’t want it,” she said. “It felt drastic to have to completely refuse, but I had to be firm. It’s like an allergy – if you have a severe reaction, you don’t try to fight it. I finally stopped questioning my feelings and accepted that it wasn’t right for me.”
She’s glad she made the change, explaining that it’s improved everything in her life. She described her previous state as getting stuck in negativity, something she actively avoids.
Oh my gosh, when I heard that Demi Moore accepted the Woman of the Year award from the Peggy Albrecht Friendly House, I nearly lost it! And what she *said*… it just broke my heart and made me admire her even more. She talked about how close she came to completely losing everything – a ‘self-destructive path,’ she called it – and how it almost ruined her career. It was so brave of her to share that, and honestly, it just proves what an incredible woman she is. I’ve been a fan forever, but hearing her talk about that… it just made me feel so much closer to her.
I believe we all have key moments that define us and influence our future. Early in my career, I was heading down a very destructive path. Despite any achievements, I constantly felt inadequate and had very little self-worth. This quickly led to a crisis, and at the time, I didn’t understand why. It might have been fate intervening.
In 2012, seeking help, Moore expressed gratitude to two people she hadn’t known well who essentially challenged her to change her life. She joked that they told her she needed to show up unless she wanted to die, explaining that they gave her an opportunity to get back on track before she ruined everything.
Moore reflected that others recognized potential in her that she hadn’t yet seen in herself. She expressed deep gratitude for their belief in her, saying she wouldn’t have achieved her current success without their support.
Miley Cyrus revealed in 2022 that she’s been working on overcoming her addiction to Xanax since 2020. She told *Rolling Stone* that recovery provided much-needed stability during a difficult time. “It gave me something to focus on and prevented me from getting lost in my own thoughts,” she explained. “It really gave me hope for the future.”
The singer explained that once they discovered a way to temporarily block out feelings and escape the pain, everything changed.
She explained that her friends at the time didn’t discourage her drug use, and it quickly spiraled out of control, becoming a seemingly endless cycle. During the pandemic, she realized she was struggling and felt disconnected from her emotions. She remembered frequently dozing off and being unable to stay awake or keep her eyes open because of how deeply affected she was.
She eventually sought help and noted that “it took some time to get on my own two feet.”
As someone who’s followed a lot of celebrity journeys, I was really moved by what Eminem shared in his upcoming documentary, *Stans*. He opened up about a really difficult time with prescription pills, even admitting to an overdose. What truly hit home, though, was that it made him miss his daughter Hailie’s birthday. That moment, he said, was a huge wake-up call and the catalyst for him making a change in his life. It’s a powerful reminder that even incredibly successful people face personal battles, and it’s amazing to see him share his story.
He explained that he started crying because he realized how much he had been missing out on. He described a harsh internal monologue, repeatedly asking himself if he wanted to repeat past mistakes and miss out on life again. He pushed himself to act, even if it was difficult, urging himself to do it for the sake of his loved ones.
Focusing on making music again played a key role in the Oscar-winning actor’s recovery from addiction.
He described how something had happened – the light came on. This made him realize he was no longer ashamed of being sober. Instead, he began to see his sobriety as a strength, and he felt proud of overcoming his addiction.
As someone who’s followed many journeys of personal growth, I’ve learned that setbacks can happen even after long periods of success. For me, that meant 16 years of sobriety were challenged in 2020 when, after a motorcycle accident, I unfortunately turned to Vicodin. It’s a reminder that recovery isn’t always linear, and it’s okay to acknowledge those moments when we stumble.
He explained on his *Armchair Expert* podcast that he’s been taking prescription medication consistently for about the past two months. He also mentioned he’s taking more than the prescribed dose.
He went on to say he was miserable and felt he was deceiving everyone around him. He knew he needed to stop, but his tolerance was increasing so fast that he was now using eight pills a day. He was terrified of the severe withdrawal symptoms he knew were coming, and he was starting to feel incredibly isolated, burdened by a huge secret.
In 2018, the star of *Halloween* openly discussed her decade-long struggle with opioid addiction. It began in the late 1980s after a small cosmetic procedure to address her naturally puffy eyes. The resulting prescription dramatically altered her life. As she told *People* magazine, she spent ten years stealing and deceiving others, all in secret. “No one knew,” she said. “No one.”
Curtis recalls the summer of 1998 as her lowest point. Her sister arrived with prescription painkillers for a broken rib, and Curtis, overwhelmed, took all of them. Knowing her sister would discover the missing pills before leaving, Curtis confessed in a note left on the suitcase. To her relief, her sister responded with love and concern, telling Curtis she couldn’t bear to watch her self-destruct.
Jamie Lee Curtis went to her first support group meeting on February 3, 1999, and on that same day, she told her husband, filmmaker Christopher Guest, about her past struggles with addiction. She explained that he was surprised he hadn’t realized she was going through this, and she has remained sober ever since.
Drew Barrymore, who has previously sought treatment for substance abuse, revealed in 2021 that she had reached a significant point in her recovery. During an interview on CBS Mornings, she shared that she’d been sober for two and a half years, explaining that alcohol simply wasn’t beneficial to her life.
It’s amazing how freeing and nerve-wracking it feels to finally share who you are, what you believe, and everything you’ve achieved.
Drew Barrymore later told the Los Angeles Times she avoids calling herself “sober” because she doesn’t want to give the impression that she’s overly strict or flawless.
She explained that she used to tell herself, ‘I can learn this, I can solve this.’ But eventually, she came to a different conclusion: ‘I’m not going to master this, and that’s okay.’
Bradley Cooper battled a cocaine addiction in the early 2000s. His friend, Will Arnett, helped him by directly addressing the issue and confronting him about his struggles.
Cooper shared on the *Smartless* podcast in 2022 that it was then he first understood he was struggling with drugs and alcohol, a moment he says he’ll never forget.
Cooper explained that Arnett’s willingness to have a difficult conversation was the turning point that led him to get sober and change his life.
Edward Norton, known for his role in *Fight Club*, battled alcohol addiction for years. He credits Bradley Cooper with helping him achieve sobriety. Accepting an award from Cooper at the 2020 National Board of Review Annual Awards, Norton shared, “I got sober because of this guy,” and added that he’s been happier every day since.
In September 2023, the former *Cruel Intentions* star revealed on Instagram that they had been without nicotine or marijuana – and other substances – for the longest time since their teenage years.
I’m so grateful for the liberation I’ve found by overcoming addiction and finally being free from relying on substances. Honestly, experiencing genuine sobriety, mental clarity, and a deeper spiritual connection feels incredible – it’s a really good feeling.
In 2018, the singer celebrated six years of being sober while on tour. However, she surprised her fans later that year with the release of her song “Sober,” in which she admitted to having struggled with relapse.
She sang, filled with regret, apologizing to her parents for falling off the wagon. ‘Mom, I’m so sorry I’m not sober,’ she confessed, and pleaded with her father to forgive the mess she’d made. She also expressed gratitude to those who had stood by her, acknowledging this wasn’t the first time she’d struggled, repeating her apology for being unable to stay sober.
A month later, Lovato was hospitalized for a near-fatal overdose.
She shared on Instagram a couple of weeks ago that she’s been open about her struggles with addiction. She explained that it’s an ongoing battle, not something she’s simply overcome. She needs time to focus on healing and getting better, and she’s incredibly grateful for all the support she’s received. She’s hopeful for the future and determined to continue fighting for her sobriety.
In 2018, she spoke about her past struggles with sex and alcohol. She explained that her addictions tended to change over time, and when she was younger, she believed sex could solve any problem. She later recognized she had also developed a serious issue with drinking.
She recalled a moment when she hit a low point – she was home alone and was about to open her third bottle of wine. That’s when she realized she might have a drinking problem.
I stopped completely and abruptly. That’s just how I am – I can do that. I tend to get really into things, so I always have to be careful and monitor my behavior. It’s not necessarily *what* you’re doing, but *how* and *why* you’re doing it. The motivation behind the behavior is what matters. For example, wanting to have a lot of sex is fine, but you need to examine *why* you want that.
Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean revealed he first experimented with drugs before shooting the music video for their 2000 hit, “The Call.” Years later, he told *Good Morning America* he was “completely out of control” during filming. He achieved sobriety in 2021, and within a year, experienced significant improvements to his health, including losing 32 pounds in seven months by eliminating alcohol and fast food.
He told *Today* in September 2022 that drinking led to both weight gain and a decline in his mental well-being.
Following the unexpected death of Mac Miller, rapper Bow Wow, whose real name is Shad Moss, opened up on Twitter about his own past struggles with addiction. He revealed he had been addicted to lean-a codeine-based cough syrup-during a period when he worked on the ‘Face Off’ album with Omarion. He admitted to being high on lean during a memorable on-stage incident with Torae on BET, explaining it affected his behavior and caused him to lose support from fans and family. He emphasized he never glorified lean in his music. Bow Wow detailed his addiction continued throughout his UCP tour with Chris Brown, where he consumed codeine syrup at least seven times a day, until a health scare during a show in Cincinnati landed him in the hospital with withdrawal symptoms. He described the pain as unlike anything he’d ever experienced, causing him to feel intensely cold and forcing him to miss shows in Chicago and Baltimore. He confessed he was using the drug to appear cool and urged others to avoid it, encouraging them to be good children and strive for their best selves. He vowed to speak out more about the issue, hoping to prevent young people from facing similar struggles and asking parents to educate their children about the dangers of drugs. He shared that his stomach has never fully recovered and reiterated that staying drug-free is the best path. He concluded by expressing his love for his fans and urging young artists to break the cycle of drug use, emphasizing the importance of preserving young lives.
In 2018, the singer opened up about her struggles with addiction, coinciding with the release of her album *No Shame* and her memoir *My Thoughts Exactly*. She revealed she had been heavily using cocaine and drinking excessively. Things came to a head when, after accidentally hitting Orlando Bloom with her head at Kate Hudson’s Halloween party and losing consciousness, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin organized an intervention to help her.
In an interview with The Guardian, she described feeling deeply unfulfilled. She recalled a particularly low point when she thought, ‘Perhaps heroin would finally make me feel something, because nothing else was helping.’
The actor known for *The Parent Trap* struggled with cocaine addiction during the 1980s, leading him to seek treatment in 1990. He later shared on *Today* that he came of age in the 1960s and 70s, a time when attitudes toward drug use were very different.
Looking back, it’s shocking to realize how much money I was blowing on cocaine – seriously, it was like funding movie productions. I was a daily user throughout the ’80s, and it was a constant battle. I remember countless nights begging God to help me stop, promising I’d get clean if He just gave me a few hours before I had to go to work. But then, every afternoon around 4 o’clock, I’d convince myself it wasn’t *that* bad and start all over again. It was a terrible cycle.
He described a powerful experience – what he called seeing a white light – where he felt like he was either dying or losing everything important in his life. He then had to explain this to his then-fiancée, Meg Ryan, and afterward, he decided to get help. This, he said, marked the end of his struggle with cocaine.
I was really concerned when I heard about what happened with Ryan Lochte in Newport Beach – apparently, he tried to force open his hotel room door. Thankfully, he decided to get help in 2018. His team released a statement saying he’s been privately struggling with alcohol addiction for a long time, and it’s become a really damaging cycle. They said he finally realized he needs professional support to get better, and he’s starting treatment right away. It’s good to see him taking this step; I’m hoping for the best for him.
According to a recent statement, Ryan understands that overcoming this illness is crucial, not only to prevent future regrets, but also to be a good husband and father, and to have a chance at competing in his fifth Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 and regaining his top form.
Despite knowing you shouldn’t get sober for another person, Jason Ritter credits his relationship with Melanie Lynskey as a key factor in his decision to stop drinking.
He realized how wonderful she was and believed she deserved someone truly great. Appearing on *The Drew Barrymore Show* in March 2023, he admitted he didn’t think he was that person, feeling he was ‘a little bit too crazy’ for her.
However, as Ritter noted to TopMob News, he now sees that sobriety is ultimately a personal choice.
Looking back on the beginning of their relationship, he explained that he often framed his actions as being for her because he didn’t feel good about himself at the time. He prioritized avoiding her pain over his own. ‘It was easier to say I was doing it for her then,’ he said. ‘Now, I’m doing things for my own sake.’
The country singer has been sober for almost ten years, but achieving that wasn’t easy. His struggle with alcohol and painkillers started shortly after high school and continued even as his career gained momentum. He confessed to *People* magazine that he always kept a black leather laptop bag nearby stocked with Jagermeister or vodka, needing “a few good swigs every hour and a half to two hours,” and taking “a pill or two every three or four hours.”
Despite everything, it didn’t hinder his work. “I wasn’t falling apart,” he explained. “Actually, I was more productive then than I am today, and that’s what really worried me.”
In late 2011, he was hospitalized with pancreatitis and warned that his life was in danger if he didn’t quit drinking. He admitted he initially tried to cut back on his own, setting daily limits like, “I’ll only take two pills today,” or rationing his alcohol with markings on the bottle. While this worked for a couple of days, he’d often relapse, especially when social events came up.
Gilbert eventually realized he needed professional help and entered rehab on December 18, 2011. He explained, “I finally admitted I couldn’t overcome this on my own.” He was frustrated and ashamed, saying, “It really bothered me, and I’m usually a very determined person, but this was one thing I just couldn’t control.”
