The lightsaber is arguably the most famous weapon in film history. From the moment Obi-Wan Kenobi reveals Luke Skywalker’s father’s lightsaber, the story takes a dramatic turn. While the original Star Wars trilogy featured only four distinct lightsabers – limited by the number of Jedi and Sith – later films exploded with them. It often seems like every character has a lightsaber! Despite their prevalence, the lightsabers aren’t all created equal; some have unique designs, while others feel mass-produced.
Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber is arguably the most iconic in the Star Wars universe, appearing frequently throughout the films and even being used by his children, Luke and Rey. However, many other cool lightsabers have only appeared briefly. Here are four of the most memorable single-use lightsabers from the Star Wars saga.
4) Qui-Gon Jinn’s Lightsaber
The prequel Star Wars films had a big challenge: portraying the Jedi Order when it was at its strongest. *The Phantom Menace* begins slowly, centering on Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan uses a blue lightsaber, while Qui-Gon chooses a green crystal, a choice that would later influence Luke Skywalker.
Qui-Gon Jinn’s lightsaber stands out from those of other Jedi, featuring a predominantly black hilt instead of silver. This darker design likely reflects his independent spirit and willingness to explore the Force outside the strict rules of the Jedi Order. Sadly, Qui-Gon dies shortly after being introduced, leaving his reasons for this unique design unexplored.
3) Dark Rey’s Switch Saber
After escaping Jakku and aiding the Resistance in defeating the First Order, Rey feels lost and struggles to find her purpose. Even training with Luke Skywalker doesn’t provide the answers she seeks. When she confronts Kylo Ren on the wreckage of the second Death Star, she’s deeply conflicted. To make matters worse, Rey suddenly has to battle an evil counterpart of herself.
Dark Rey is already intimidating, but her unique lightsaber makes her even more frightening. It can split into two blades or be used as a single one, giving her a versatile weapon. However, because Rey ultimately chooses to follow the path of the Jedi and join the Skywalker legacy, this dangerous lightsaber only appears briefly.
2) Baylan Skoll’s Great Lightsaber
Order 66 resulted in the deaths of many Jedi, but the survivors faced an even more difficult struggle. Forced into hiding, they constantly had to fight to stay alive. Some, like Ahsoka Tano, continued to fight for what was right, while others turned to darker choices. Baylan Skoll, for example, became a hired gun, working for Morgan Elsbeth, an ally of Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Skoll appears in Season 1 of *Star Wars: Ahsoka* as he tries to prevent Ahsoka from interfering with Elsbeth’s schemes. He always carries his lightsaber, which has a distinctive orange-red blade. The reason for this unusual color isn’t explained, but Season 2 of *Ahsoka* might offer some answers.
