Reese Witherspoon isn’t hiding any big little lies about Gone Girl.
The Academy Award winner revealed that director David Fincher was strongly opposed to her being cast as Amy Dunne in the 2012 film adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s popular thriller. The role eventually went to Rosamund Pike.
Reese explained on the September 17th episode of the *Las Culturistas* podcast with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers that David told her she wasn’t right for a role, and as a result, he wouldn’t be casting her. She clarified that she didn’t blame David for the decision.
The 49-year-old, whose company (originally Pacific Standard, later Hello Sunshine) made this film as its first project, pointed out that even the author’s approval didn’t convince the director of *The Social Network*.
Reese explained that she spoke with author Gillian Flynn, who strongly encouraged her to take on the project. However, someone else disagreed, telling her she was mistaken.
She explained that it was a big learning moment for her—one she’s grateful for, in retrospect.
Reese confessed that the experience was a humbling one. It made her realize she wasn’t the best fit for every situation, and she acknowledged he was correct to point that out. She fully agreed with his assessment.
I’m still so thrilled with how the cast came together for the film! It was perfect to see Rosamund leading the way, alongside fantastic actors like Ben Affleck, Carrie Coon, Tyler Perry, and Neil Patrick Harris. They all brought something special to their roles, and I couldn’t have imagined a better group of people for the project.
She thought David Fincher’s direction was fantastic, and praised Rosamund Pike for playing a truly villainous character. She described Ben Affleck as somewhat naive in comparison.
Honestly, seeing David not choose me for the part really changed things for me. It wasn’t just about being disappointed; it actually helped me *understand* what being a producer truly meant. It was a turning point in how I saw my role and my responsibilities on the project.
She explained that being a good producer also means knowing when to step back and let others lead. It’s about doing what you can to support the team, encourage collaboration, and foster creativity, all to ensure the final product is the best it can be. That experience taught her a valuable lesson.

Reese Witherspoon was born Laura Jean Reese Witherspoon in New Orleans in 1976. Interestingly, “Reese” is her mother Betty’s original family name.
Okay, so get this – she *says* she’s related to John Witherspoon, you know, one of the guys who actually *signed* the Declaration of Independence?! Isn’t that amazing? I’ve been trying to find proof, but the official genealogy society hasn’t confirmed it yet. Still, I totally believe it, it just *fits* her, you know?
Oh my gosh, did you know Reese’s dad was a lieutenant in the Army Reserve? It’s so cool! Because of that, she actually *lived* in Wiesbaden, Germany, for four whole years when she was little! Can you imagine? It just makes her even more amazing, knowing she’s got this international background!
As a child, she was a serious and avid reader, earning the nickname “Little Miss Type A” from her parents. Years later, she used a variation of this nickname for her production company, Type A. However, in a 2005 interview with *Interview* magazine, she explained the name came from a childhood fascination with psychology – at age seven, she understood the difference between Type A and Type B personalities. She admitted she actually wished she’d chosen a different name, like Dogfood Films or Fork, feeling she’d be forever associated with the label.
She started her acting journey at age seven, appearing in commercials for a florist. This early experience motivated her to begin taking acting classes.
In 1991, she went to an open audition for the movie *The Man in the Moon*, hoping for a small part. Surprisingly, she was cast as the main character, Dani Trant – a 14-year-old experiencing first love with her 17-year-old neighbor. This role earned her a nomination for Best Young Actress at the Young Artist Awards that same year.
I still can’t believe she was a total academic *and* a rising star at the same time! Like, she started acting at just fourteen, but somehow managed to keep her grades up and actually *get into* Stanford! Can you imagine? She was studying English literature, of all things, but she only stayed for a year. A YEAR! Because she was already getting so much attention for her acting, she had to chase that dream. It was the right choice, obviously, but it just proves how incredibly talented and dedicated she is!
Reese Witherspoon first met her future husband, Ryan Phillippe, at her 21st birthday party in 1997, thanks to a friend who brought him along. She playfully told him at the end of the night, as she later shared with People magazine, that she considered him her birthday gift.
Following the release of the popular film *Cruel Intentions* in 1999, Ryan Phillippe proposed to his girlfriend in December 1998 with a special breakfast of waffles, strawberries, and cream. They married on June 5, 1999, in Charleston, South Carolina, and welcomed their daughter, Ava, three months later.
On September 29, 2001, Reese Witherspoon hosted the first episode of *Saturday Night Live* following the September 11th attacks. Speaking with Katie Couric in 2015, she described the time as very difficult for New York City. Witherspoon expressed pride in being there and performing alongside firefighters, Paul Simon, and Lorne Michaels, praising Michaels’ efforts to revive the show and bring laughter back to the country.
When Reese Witherspoon was cast as the lead in Mira Nair’s film *Vanity Fair*, Nair playfully suggested she gain weight for the role by getting pregnant. 14. She and Phillippe split in 2006 after seven years of marriage.
Reese Witherspoon was inspired to become a producer after receiving a particularly bad script from her agent. She explained to Chelsea Handler in 2017 that she realized if all actresses were being offered similar roles, she needed to create her own opportunities, stating, “If every actress in Hollywood wants this part, I need to start making movies because this is not worth women’s talent.”
Following her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon met talent agent Jim Toth at a party in early 2010. She recalled to *Elle* magazine in 2012 that a very drunk man was aggressively pursuing her and making a scene. He was shouting at her, acting foolishly, and insisting they should know each other. Witherspoon responded that she definitely didn’t know him. Toth stepped in, explaining that the man was recently heartbroken and gently removed him from the situation, showcasing his kind and helpful nature.
The couple got married at her ranch in Ojai, California, in March 2011, and had a son named Tennessee in September 2012.
In 2013, police in Atlanta stopped Jim Toth and Reese Witherspoon because Toth was driving erratically, changing lanes without signaling. While officers were arresting Toth for driving under the influence, Witherspoon reportedly became upset and confrontational, allegedly asking the officers if they knew who she was. When they said it didn’t matter, she supposedly replied that they would soon find out. She was then arrested for disruptive behavior and later pleaded no contest to a charge of obstructing the officers.
Look, given the legal stuff happening right now, I can’t get into all the details. But I want to be upfront: I definitely had too much to drink, and I’m truly embarrassed by what came out of my mouth. It was a frightening night, and I was worried about my husband, but that’s no excuse for how I acted. I was completely disrespectful to the officer – he was just doing his job – and the things I said don’t represent who I am at all. I have huge respect for law enforcement, and I sincerely apologize for my behavior.
In a 2002 interview with *People* magazine, Reese Witherspoon playfully confessed she loved Tupperware so much she’d always pop into a Hold Everything store whenever she passed one. Unfortunately, those stores closed in 2006.

In 2015, Reese Witherspoon started her retail company, Draper James, naming it after her grandparents, Dorothea Draper and William James Witherspoon. The brand features clothing, accessories, and home goods inspired by the Southern United States, and its first physical store opened in Nashville that fall.
I was so excited when Blair released her first book, *Whiskey in a Teacup*, back in September 2018! It’s a beautiful look at her life growing up in the South, and it really resonated with me. And if that wasn’t enough, she also runs a book club right on Instagram, which is such a fun way to connect with other readers and discover new titles. I’m a dedicated follower and love everything she does!
Reese Witherspoon passed on roles in the films *Scream* and *Urban Legend*. She auditioned for the main part in *Romeo + Juliet*, but Claire Danes ultimately got the role. Later, she had to leave Pixar’s *Brave* because she struggled to convincingly perform the Scottish accent for the character of Merida.
24. She kept most of Elle Woods’ iconic wardrobe from the Legally Blonde franchise.
Reese Witherspoon was a key force behind the Time’s Up movement.
