Sony’s legal battle with the game *Light of Motiram*, which they claim copies *Horizon*, has escalated. Tencent, defending *Light of Motiram*, argues that Sony is trying to unfairly control common elements within the game genre.
So, I just read what Tencent had to say in response to PlayStation’s lawsuit – The Game Post had the scoop. Apparently, PlayStation is *not* happy with Tencent’s new game, calling it a blatant copy and even using the word “shameless” to describe it. They filed the lawsuit on July 25th, and things are getting pretty heated!
The creator of the game *Light of Motiram* is defending their work, claiming *Horizon* relies on common themes and ideas found in numerous other games, including titles like *Enslaved: Odyssey to the West*, *The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*, *Far Cry: Primal*, *Far Cry: New Dawn*, *Outer Wilds*, and *Biomutant*.
It added: “Sony seeks an impermissible monopoly on genre conventions.”
Tencent believes PlayStation’s lawsuit isn’t about protecting its own ideas, but rather about discouraging competition and innovation from other businesses.
It says:
Sony isn’t trying to protect its creative work from being copied or stolen. Instead, it’s wrongly trying to control a widely used and familiar part of popular culture and claim it as its own.
The Chinese company also disputes Sony’s statement that Horizon is a uniquely original fictional world, pointing to pre-release comments from Guerrilla Games as evidence.
It counters:
Jan-Bart Van Beek, the art director for Horizon Zero Dawn, revealed in a documentary that the game’s central idea – a brave, red-haired woman exploring the remains of a destroyed world filled with robot creatures – was actually used in another game called Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, which came out in 2013.
Tencent argues that Sony is pursuing the wrong company regarding the game Light of Motiram, and is therefore requesting the lawsuit be dismissed.
The game is being created by Polaris Quest, which is owned by Tencent Technology in Shanghai, and Proximity Beta in Singapore. The text points out that Sony focused on Tencent Holdings, but it’s actually just the parent organization, not directly involved in the game’s development.
The report concludes that claims about Tencent proposing a mobile version of Horizon to Sony in 2024 are unfounded, because no one from Tencent attended the meeting in question.
It adds:
Even if Tencent Holdings was responsible for a meeting between Sony and other Tencent companies, Sony hasn’t provided enough evidence to show that anything discussed at the meeting actually harmed them. Specifically, Sony claims the meeting involved a request to use their ‘Horizon’ intellectual property, but they haven’t alleged any copyright or trademark violations occurred.
The report estimates that Light of Motiram won’t be available until 2027. It also points out that Sony’s legal argument relies on speculation, since the game’s visuals and design are still subject to change.
Interestingly, the game’s developer has removed most of the original artwork from its Steam page and swapped it with completely different images that don’t look anything like the game used to.
It will be fascinating to watch Sony’s reaction and see what happens next as a result of this situation.
Most people have already made up their minds about Tencent, but it’s still unclear if legal proceedings will reach the same conclusion.
