Borderlands 4 PS5 Performance Problems are a “Known Issue”, Studio Recommends Restarting the Game

Players on both PC and now PlayStation 5 are experiencing performance issues with Borderlands 4. Recent reports from PS5 Pro users indicate that the game runs poorly, and this problem seems to worsen the longer you play. Some believe this could be due to a memory leak, a technical glitch where the game doesn’t manage its memory efficiently, leading to slowdowns or crashes.

Players on the *Borderlands* subreddit have reported that *Borderlands 4* on PS5 and PS5 Pro often runs smoothly for about an hour before performance issues begin. The extent of these issues seems to differ for each player, and may also depend on how far they are in the game. Some users are even experiencing crashes right from the main menu.

So, I saw a post from Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox, and he acknowledged that *Borderlands 4* is having some performance problems, especially on the PS5 Pro. Apparently, they’re already on it trying to fix it! He suggested a temporary workaround too – if you notice the game starting to lag or slow down, just quit out and restart it. Hopefully, they get a proper fix rolling out soon, but that’s what he recommends for now.

Pitchford reported that players might experience performance issues on the PS5 Pro after playing for a long time. The temporary fix is to close and restart the game. He apologized for the inconvenience.

Although *Borderlands 4* sold 2 million copies in its first week, many players are experiencing performance problems, even on high-end computers. Fans have voiced their frustrations online, and the game’s CEO, Pitchford, responded by advising dissatisfied players to request a refund.

Pitchford explained that players are free to play the game as they choose, but if they’re unhappy with it, they should request a refund through Steam. He used a car analogy: just like you wouldn’t put a high-performance Ferrari engine in a monster truck and expect it to handle the same way, the game is designed for a specific experience. He offered to help players improve their performance if they share their system specifications.

Pitchford highlighted how DLSS technology helps *Borderlands 4* keep a smooth frame rate without needing to adjust many settings. He also mentioned that players who prefer not to use DLSS will have a variety of graphics options to customize, allowing them to balance visual quality and performance to their liking.

I understand you’re not thrilled with the suggestion to use DLSS, but it’s the best way to improve performance in this game. If you’re unhappy with the frame rate even with the tools available, you might consider playing a different game. We designed this game to be enjoyable at 30fps, and even better at 60fps. We’ve given you lots of options to adjust settings and find a balance between visual quality and performance, so feel free to experiment. Would you like some help customizing your settings to get the experience you want?
