Robin Wright, known for her role in ‘The Girlfriend,’ has shared that the final episode of the Prime Video thriller wasn’t completely finished when filming began. She revealed the ending was still being developed as they were shooting.
The series, adapted from Michelle Frances’ novel, centers on a tense rivalry between Laura (Wright), a successful art dealer, and Cherry (Olivia Cooke), her son’s girlfriend from a different background.
Their relationship starts badly and never improves, as both women compete for Daniel’s (Laurie Davidson) attention using increasingly dramatic methods.
Creating the right amount of suspense was difficult as Laura and Cherry faced their final confrontation at Laura’s luxurious London home, knowing only one would survive.
Wright, who both directed and starred in the film, described working to build suspense in the final scene, feeling like he was ‘trying to find the waves’ of tension.
She explained they were always looking for moments of reprieve – those points where they could catch their breath and feel relieved something bad hadn’t occurred. They were constantly trying to identify when the difficult parts started and ended, and where they could finally relax.
We all collaborated really well. During filming, the young actresses – Olivia and Laurie, as I called them – often improvised. Sometimes, Olivia and I would experiment with scenes, and something special would happen.
“It’s so much fun to work that way, I think,” added Wright.

The actress, known for her roles in House of Cards and Wonder Woman, believes the ending of The Girlfriend will surprise audiences. She explained that the show’s six episodes are designed to keep viewers guessing and constantly changing their minds about who to root for.
Cooke, a fellow cast member, explained that the show explores finding the right balance – knowing how much to emphasize or de-emphasize moments to keep both the story and the characters feeling authentic.
As a film lover, one of the trickiest things is showing a story from multiple points of view. You really want to make sure the core of each character stays consistent, you know? Like, even when seeing things through another person’s eyes, Cherry still needs to *feel* like Cherry, and Laura needs to remain Laura. So, a lot of the work – often right on set – was finding those subtle differences in how they’d react, but then amplifying them just enough. It was a real balancing act – you wanted to highlight their contrasting perspectives without fundamentally changing who they were.
The Girlfriend is available to stream on Prime Video.
