The DC Universe is off to a strong start. Following the release of Creature Commandos, the franchise is now fully embracing its biggest hero, Superman. James Gunn’s 2025 film has been a major hit, performing well in theaters and on demand. Its success has led to plans for a sequel, currently titled Man of Tomorrow. Gunn has emphasized that this next film won’t just focus on Superman, but will also heavily feature Lex Luthor, who will join forces with his arch-enemy to confront a new danger.
While it might seem like a step back for Superman to share the focus, that’s not James Gunn’s intention. After getting his own movie, David Corenswet’s Superman will take a supporting role to give other characters a chance to lead. But he’ll actually appear more often overall, with plans for him to return to the DC Universe very soon.
The Timing of Superman‘s Release on HBO Max May Not Be an Accident
These days, a movie isn’t truly considered successful until its streaming performance is known, as many viewers now prefer the convenience of watching at home rather than going to theaters. *Superman* will get its chance to prove its success on September 19th when it becomes available on HBO Max, part of Warner Bros. Discovery. While releasing on streaming a few weeks after being available for rental, it might seem minor, James Gunn and the team at DC Studios are being extra careful. They want to make sure audiences have easy access to their content, and watching *Superman* could be key soon, as another DC Universe project is heading into a potentially pivotal phase.
The second season of HBO Max’s *Peacemaker* is currently airing, continuing the story of Christopher Smith and his team as they adjust to life after saving the world from an alien attack. Things aren’t going well for Peacemaker, and he’s considering permanently staying in a different reality he discovered. The last three episodes will focus on this storyline, and interestingly, Episode 6 is releasing shortly after *Superman* premieres on HBO Max. While it’s not confirmed, a cameo from Superman would fit perfectly with the show’s direction.
Superman Fits in With What Peacemaker Is Going for in Season 2
A major question hanging over Season 2 of *Peacemaker* is the nature of the alternate universe we’ve seen. It appears to be a reality specifically created for Peacemaker, letting him reconnect with his deceased father and brother, and be with Emilia Harcourt. The leading idea is that this universe is one where the Nazis won World War II, allowing Peacemaker’s prejudiced father to become a powerful figure. If this is true, it would open the door to potentially including Superman in the story. Krypton would still be destroyed, sending Kal-El’s ship to Earth, but instead of being raised by the kind Kents, he might be found by warped versions of his parents, obsessed with maintaining a ‘pure’ world.
DC Comics has explored alternate versions of Superman before, like in *Superman: Red Son*, which imagined him being raised in the Soviet Union. James Gunn could take a similar approach, perhaps introducing a Superman who serves the Nazis, or the original Superman could learn about these changes happening in the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. Considering the new *Superman* series is debuting on HBO Max around the same time *Peacemaker*’s story ramps up, it seems likely that Superman will soon get involved in the fight against threats like the Butterflies.
