Nicholas Ralph, who plays James in ‘All Creatures Great and Small‘, has shared that his character is continuing to heal well after the events of the last season and is now feeling much more stable and secure.
He’s had four years to work through those issues, and Helen has been helping him. During the time we haven’t seen him, he’s been going through a process of healing and growth.
He’s returned to doing what he excels at, and now he has some help from Jimmy! It’s heartwarming to see his son alongside him, dressed in his miniature vet’s coat and carrying his own little bag.
He’s really enjoying it, and it’s great to see. He’s become confident and is even picking up the veterinary terms, which is wonderful for James to witness.

You know, Ralph was telling me about James and Helen, and it’s really lovely to see how their marriage has grown since we last checked in. With James back in Darrowby and fully back in each other’s lives, they’re really making the most of being together again. It’s a sweet development, honestly.
They’ve rediscovered their connection and are supporting each other again. Their relationship feels fun and lively, especially now that they have two young children, Jimmy and Rosie, who keep them busy and entertained. They’re a happy family of four.
It’s a unique kind of enjoyment – they find happiness both as a couple and as a close-knit family. It was really heartwarming to watch, especially considering everything they’ve been through – periods of hardship, being apart, and James’s time with the RAF. He returned home, but struggled to express or share what he’d experienced.
With Helen’s help, he was finally able to achieve his goal, and it felt good to return to this situation.
The sixth season begins with the familiar characters from Skeldale in 1945, as World War II in Europe is ending.
The show returns to Darrowby with progress in veterinary medicine, growing families, and some new characters, all hoping for a better and calmer future.
As you’d expect from All Creatures Great and Small, there will be many more touching stories about people and animals.
You can watch seasons 1 through 5 of All Creatures Great and Small on Channel 5. The book series by James Herriot, ‘All Creatures Great and Small’, is also available to order from Amazon.
