Now that *Dying Light: The Beast* is available, Kyle Crane’s story continues with a compelling new chapter. He’s moved past his previous heroic missions and is now driven by a personal, darker quest for revenge against The Baron. To help him, he’s also learned some new skills and abilities.
If you’ve played Techland’s games before, you’ll likely enjoy how polished and familiar this feels. But for newcomers, *The Beast* can be a bit much to handle. Don’t worry though – we’ve explored the Castor Woods extensively and put together some helpful tips to make your experience smoother.
Let’s get started!
1. Be Smart When Taking on the Infected
Finding a big group of enemies might seem like a good way to quickly get useful items, especially when you’re just starting the game. However, trying to fight them all at once will likely slow you down. Unless you’re playing on an easier difficulty, dying means losing experience points, which can be really annoying and make the game feel like a repetitive chore.
A good strategy is to draw one or two of the Infected away from the group, making the remaining enemies easier to handle. We suggest targeting Goons and Runners first, as they’re tougher to defeat and often bring reinforcements, making them particularly troublesome.
2. Unlock Beast Mode Control ASAP
Early in the game, you’ll unlock the ability to activate Beast Mode whenever you choose. This is a powerful skill because normally, you have to wait for the Beast meter to fill up before you can use Kyle’s strongest attacks. Beast Mode gives you control over when you unleash those powerful moves.
We suggest focusing on missions where you battle Chimeras first, before exploring other optional activities. Mastering Beast Mode is a huge advantage in this game, and it will make the beginning much smoother and less difficult.
3. When In Doubt, Drop Kick!
Similar to his ability to control beasts, Kyle learns a powerful combat move called Drop Kick relatively quickly. It’s incredibly useful – a well-timed kick can knock Infected into each other, stunning them and giving you a chance to inflict major damage. It’s easy to master, and you’ll soon be able to quickly take down smaller enemies and remove them from the fight.
4. Use the UV Flashlight
Essentially, use this to your advantage as much as possible! We know it’s the only real weakness the Infected have, so we should definitely exploit it fully.
Similar to the Drop Lick, this ability gives you valuable space and allows for a few quick attacks while enemies are stunned and backing away. We’ve relied on it countless times, and it’s likely to help you survive tough situations too.
5. Use the Environment
Kyle isn’t just reliant on his weapons, skills, and tools to survive. He can also use the environment to his advantage. For example, you can find gas cylinders and either shoot them to explode or pick them up and throw them at groups of enemies for significant damage.
We suggest saving your ammunition whenever possible, because it can be difficult to find more, particularly at the beginning of the game.
6. The Beauty In The Beasts
The Chimeras are challenging opponents, and for good reason. Defeating them is essential to the story and gives Kyle valuable GSB, which he can use to improve his abilities.
Okay, seriously, the Beast Skills are a game-changer! Once you start building up that momentum, you can really tear through the Infected, and I’m hoping to even take down a Volatile with them eventually. They totally let you flip a bad situation around, and being able to activate Beast Mode whenever I want? Amazing. Once you unlock a few, fights become way more interesting because you can get really creative with how you handle them. That’s why I’m making getting those Chimera parts a top priority!
7. Enable Auto Sprint
We highly recommend turning on Auto Sprint right away. It makes getting around the game’s world much easier – you won’t have to constantly press a button to run, and it doesn’t drain your stamina, saving you a lot of time in the long run.
It also helps you escape the dangerous Volatiles at night much more easily. Trust us, you’ll appreciate having extra speed when one of those creatures catches your scent!
8. Use Firearms Sparingly
I love using powerful weapons, but honestly, they don’t have a ton of ammo. So, rushing in and just firing everything right away is risky – you can quickly run out of bullets at the worst possible moment!
We were on top of a truck and quickly surrounded by Infected. There was a gas cylinder nearby, but it was too dangerous to try and grab it. Unfortunately, we’d used up all the ammo for our submachine gun about thirty minutes earlier.
Conserving your ammunition will help you survive much longer than rushing in recklessly.
9. Keep Crafting!
Failing to regularly check your inventory and craft items after fighting enemies will likely cause problems later on. Almost anything useful, like health-restoring bandages, can be made quickly, ensuring you’re prepared for whatever challenges you face while exploring.
Remember to visit crafting tables at your safe havens to see if you’ve unlocked any new weapon or gear blueprints. It’s a good idea to save a couple you want to focus on so you know what materials to gather while you’re out exploring.
10. Use Your Survival Sense
One of the first missions involves finding a creature by following its tracks. We wasted a lot of time carefully searching the area until we discovered that pressing the right stick makes Kyle send out a pulse, which greatly simplifies the tracking process.
As a gamer, I’ve seen this feature a lot – it’s designed to help you out when things get tough. And honestly, in a game like *The Beast*, where everything feels like a real struggle and you have to *work* for every little win, that help is seriously valuable. It’s a relief to have something that makes things a bit easier when you’re putting in so much effort!
11. Try Switching the Kick and Jump Buttons
The standard controls work fine, but we discovered that swapping the kick and jump buttons made moving around and fighting much easier to understand. It might not work for everyone, as it depends on what you like, but it’s worth a try – you can easily change back to the original settings if you prefer.
12. Alternate Between Exploration and Missions
The game can be really challenging if you rush straight to the story missions, both at the beginning and later on. It’s important to spend time gathering resources by fighting enemies and exploring different areas. This will help you craft the supplies you need before tackling the main objectives.
It’s also helpful to intercept convoys for ammunition and set up safe havens around the world to simplify your journeys. The Castor Woods offer a mix of exploration and story elements, and how you prioritize those is up to you. It’s a large and content-rich area, and generally, taking the time to explore it is rewarding.
13. Choose Your Difficulty Wisely
Let me tell you, playing this game on hard is *tough*. Seriously, I spent so much time replaying sections of the Castor Woods, it was a real challenge! Lowering the difficulty to normal helped, but if you’re new to the game, I’d suggest starting on story mode. Once you get the hang of things and find what works for you, then you can try bumping up the difficulty. That’s what I did, and it made the experience much more enjoyable!
14. Loot Every Kill!
Always search enemies after defeating them! Gathering supplies is crucial for survival, as you’ll need them to create better weapons, tools, and equipment. Collecting these items now will save you time later, so quickly check each enemy you defeat.
15. Use Vehicles As A Quick Killing Tool
Whenever you encounter a large group of Infected and find a vehicle, jump in and drive through them! It’s an effective way to collect resources and supplies, and it’s also a really satisfying way to clear them out – think of it like a zombie version of the classic game Carmageddon.
With a little driving around in your truck, you’ll quickly gather all the materials you need for crafting. Finding extra fuel will boost your rewards even more, so be sure to look for it while you explore.
That’s all for now! Hopefully, these tips will give you a great start, not just at the beginning of the game, but as you progress. And most importantly, remember to have fun! If you have any suggestions that could help other players, please share them in the comments – let’s work together to defeat The Baron!
