EA Is Shutting Down 10 Games Very Soon

It’s become common for modern games that rely on online services to eventually disappear. Unlike older games on cartridges or discs that you could play anytime, many digital games need constant online support, and that support doesn’t last forever. Recently, Electronic Arts announced a list of games that will soon lose their online features.

So, EA just dropped an update about which of their older games are losing online support, and unfortunately, they’re shutting things down *sooner* than they originally said for a few titles. They haven’t really explained *why* they’re doing this for most of these games, but honestly, it’s pretty common – companies usually move their focus (and resources) to newer, more popular games. As a gamer, it’s a bummer to see some of my favorite sports titles from the PS4 and Xbox One days go offline. Here’s the complete list of games affected and when the servers are shutting down, so you know what to expect if you’re still playing them.

NHL 21

I was a little bummed to hear that EA is shutting down the online servers for *NHL 21* on October 6th. It means no more playing online with friends, which is a shame. Luckily, we’ll still be able to play the game offline, but it’s pretty standard for EA to do this with their older sports games, so I guess I should have expected it. It’s just sad to see another online community go away.

Need for Speed: Rivals

I’m really bummed to hear that the online servers for this racing game are going offline on October 7th! That means we only have a few weeks left to race against our friends online. The good news is we can still play the game on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, just not online. If anyone’s trying to get all the achievements, we need to make sure we unlock the ones that need online play before the servers shut down!

Madden NFL 22

This year, *Madden NFL 22* will no longer offer online gameplay on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. EA previously stopped selling in-game currency for the game and will completely shut down online services on October 20th. This means players won’t be able to play online matches or use the Ultimate Team feature. However, you can still play offline modes like Franchise and Career modes without an internet connection.

FIFA 23

EA is also shutting down servers for *FIFA 23* on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One this October. This is a relatively new game, and it’s notable because it’s the last *FIFA* title EA released before switching to the EA Sports FC brand. Originally planned for December, the shutdown will now happen on October 30th. While you won’t be able to play online modes like matches anymore, you can still enjoy offline modes like Career Mode.

Dirt 3

So, as a DiRT 3 player, I just found out some pretty disappointing news. We all knew the online servers were eventually going to shut down, sometime in early 2026, but EA is pulling the plug *way* sooner – November 8th of this year! That means no more online races, custom championships, or even progressing my career online. It’s hitting all platforms – Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, PC, and even Switch. The good news, I guess, is that I can still play the DiRT Tour campaign and all the other offline stuff, but it definitely won’t be the same without the online community.

Dirt Showdown

Ugh, I’m really bummed to hear that EA is shutting down *Dirt: Showdown*! I used to love playing that arcade racer on my Xbox 360, and it was great that they even brought it to newer consoles like the Switch and PS4. Apparently, on November 8th, the online servers are going offline, and they even moved up the date from what they originally planned. It’s a shame because while you *can* still play it solo, a lot of the fun came from the online multiplayer. The good news is that if you already own it, you’ll still be able to race with friends locally in split-screen, but the online part is just disappearing. It’s sad to see another game from the *Dirt 3* family go away like this.

Grid Autosport

Okay, so I just found out that *GRID Autosport* is going offline for good on November 8th. I used to play that one on my phone and Switch! It’s already not available to buy anymore, but now all the online stuff is getting shut down completely. Don’t worry if you own it, you’ll still be able to play the career mode and everything offline, but say goodbye to racing other people online and customizing your cars with the online features. It’s a bummer, but at least the single-player stuff still works.

Grid

Both the 2019 game *Grid* and its earlier version will no longer have online support starting November 8th. The game was removed from sale in 2023, and this marks the complete end of its online features. Similar to what’s happening with other EA racing titles, you’ll still be able to enjoy the single-player career mode and other offline content.

EA Sports FC Empires

EA Sports FC Empires is the only game on this list designed specifically for mobile devices, and it will no longer be playable after November 30th on both Apple and Android. It’s already been removed from app stores, and its servers will be completely shut down on that date. Released in December 2024, the game was only available in a few countries. Now, it’s being discontinued along with other EA games. Because it relies on an internet connection to work, once the servers are gone, the game will be unplayable.

Anthem

Players of the game *Anthem* will have limited time left to enjoy it. It’s the only game on this list that isn’t a traditional sports title – it’s an online multiplayer game created by the makers of *Dragon Age*. While released in 2019 to somewhat mixed reactions, development on *Anthem* stopped in 2021. The game’s servers are scheduled to be turned off on January 12th. Because *Anthem* relies heavily on online play, this means the game will become unplayable after that date, and unfortunately, there’s no single-player content available to enjoy offline.
