Tubi is well-known for offering a great selection of horror movies, and all you have to do is watch a few ads. Right now, you can find recent favorites like *The Cabin in the Woods*, *Scream 4*, and *Sinister*, along with classics such as the original *Fright Night*, *In the Mouth of Madness*, and *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre*. Just in time for Halloween, Tubi has added a popular horror film from the 2020s, although it’s a movie that some people have mixed feelings about.
Kyle Edward Ball’s horror film, *Skinamarink*, first gained attention at the Fantasia International Film Festival in 2022, terrifying early viewers. Buzz about the movie spread quickly, and an online copy was even leaked. Despite this leak, *Skinamarink* had a successful theatrical release in the US in January 2023, earning over $2 million with a remarkably low $15,000 budget. However, even with positive reviews and financial success, a sense of mystery still surrounds this unusual horror film.
Skinamarink Is Not a Typical Horror Movie

At first glance, *Skinamarink* sounds like a truly original and interesting film-and it delivers on that promise. The story centers around two children who wake up one night to find their father missing and all the doors and windows in their house have disappeared. As things get even stranger, objects begin to vanish and then reappear floating in the air. Eventually, a mysterious voice starts talking to the children, directing them to different rooms in the house.
The idea behind *Skinamarink* is definitely unsettling, but the movie isn’t about constant jump scares. Instead, it builds a thick, lingering sense of dread. With long, slow shots of empty spaces-hallways and rooms-and glimpses of what *look* like faces hidden in the darkness, *Skinamarink*…
The movie requires viewers to stick with it and form their own opinions after it’s over. This is largely the reason it’s become so divisive.
Why Skinamarink’s Hype Hurt It

As a horror fan, I think *Skinamarink* is really interesting because, like *The Blair Witch Project*, it doesn’t spoon-feed you explanations. Don’t expect a neat and tidy reveal at the end about the voice, what happened to the parents, or even the disappearing doors and windows. It really makes you think and piece things together yourself, or discuss it with others. Honestly, some people get frustrated by that lack of clear answers, but I think it’s part of what makes the film so effective.
Despite a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the first reactions to the film *Skinamarink* were incredibly strong. Some early reviews called it a once-in-a-generation movie, with many praising its disturbing imagery and even describing it as “cursed.” This initial buzz, combined with a leaked version that spread quickly online, created a lot of anticipation and shaped people’s expectations for the film.
Viewers on Shudder, where the film is available to watch anytime, have had a wide range of reactions to Skinamarink – some predictable, and others surprisingly funny. Some, like one user named Bobcat, offered thoughtful comments, saying the movie requires active engagement. Others were less restrained in their responses.
One user, MadamHawkes, expressed extreme disappointment, stating, “This film wasn’t even worth the single star I gave it. The truly frightening thing is how much money and time was wasted making it.”
Skinamarink is a very divisive movie – people tend to either strongly love it or strongly dislike it, as reflected by its average rating on Shudder. Now available on Tubi, you can watch it and form your own opinion.
