2025 has been an incredible year for action anime, but let me tell you, the undisputed champion so far is none other than “Solo Leveling”. However, a dark horse might just challenge its throne. Typically, action anime, including “Solo Leveling”, showcase captivating, powerful, and charming main characters who effortlessly obliterate their foes with style. But what if they didn’t? That’s the intriguing question “Uglymug, Epicfighter” poses.
In a few days, “Uglymug, Epicfighter” could be 2025’s most peculiar action anime, premiering on Crunchyroll as part of their Summer 2025 anime line-up. Despite its quirky title and the unconventional appearance of the lead character, “Uglymug, Epicfighter” promises to fill the void left by Sung Jinwoo in your heart. Previews from the show’s debut have been shared, and action enthusiasts should definitely keep an eye on this fresh anime.
Uglymug, Epicfighter is Nearly Here

According to the web novel penned by Ryo Hiromatsu, the story “Uglymug, Epicfighter” centers around Shigeru, a former salesman who’s overweight and lacks a social life. After being transported to another realm, he doesn’t miraculously change his looks or social abilities, but instead, he obtains extraordinary power. His goal is to rise through the ranks and become one of the strongest individuals in this new world. Essentially, Shigeru can be likened to Sung Jinwoo without an aura.
The first scenes from the opening episode of Season 1 show Shigeru being taken to a fresh fantasy realm. Alongside him on his individual quest will be various other characters, voiced by Junichi Suwabe (as Shigeru), Maaya Uchida (as Rizu), Kento Shiraishi (as Seiji), and Konomi Inagaki (as Seika). The series is brought to life by the animation studio WHITE FOX.
Shigeru Yoshioka, self-proclaimed as ‘ugly,’ finds himself unemployed and a recluse after being wrongfully accused of a crime. One fateful day, he stumbles upon a method to travel to another world, and mysteriously, a strange screen pops up on his computer…
I’m absolutely thrilled about this amazing anime series! The opening theme, “My Way,” is brilliantly sung by TEMPEST, and when the show concludes, the end credits roll to the soothing tunes of Miyu Kaneko with her enchanting song, “Bandage.” Simply fantastic!
Uglymug, Epicfighter Could Be a Controversial Hit

The duo “Uglymug” and “Epicfighter” make their premiere on Crunchyroll on July 6th. We anticipate that the response from online viewers will be favorable, particularly with regards to the show’s action and narrative. However, there is one significant concern about the series that Western audiences might find offensive. Historically, humor based on people’s physical appearances has been a contentious trope in films and television. As societal norms have evolved, such jokes have largely been abandoned from mainstream media.
In the title character’s case, Shigeru’s unattractiveness is a key aspect that shapes his character. The humor in the series often centers around his “unattractive” looks and how he stands out as less appealing compared to those around him. Some viewers may find this funny, but others might find it problematic due to the portrayal of beauty standards in the show.
