I’m a huge fan of Nintendo’s multiplayer games, and I know a lot of other people feel the same way. I have so many great memories of late-night gaming sessions with friends and family – their games just have a way of making even casual get-togethers special. Games like Mario Kart, Mario Party, and Super Smash Bros. are responsible for some of my best multiplayer experiences. But I think Nintendo’s best multiplayer game is still to come! There’s been talk of a new title for the Switch 2, and if it delivers, it could be even better than anything they’ve made before.
I’m most excited about the possibility of *Splatoon 4* because the series has consistently improved with each new game. From the original on Wii U to the games on Nintendo Switch, each *Splatoon* title has managed to feel innovative while staying true to what makes the series fun, even with the addition of new game modes. If *Splatoon 4* keeps up this trend and utilizes the features of the next Nintendo console, it has the potential to be Nintendo’s best multiplayer game ever.
Why Splatoon Has Always Stood Out Among Nintendo’s Franchises
What really made *Splatoon* stand out was how fresh and different it felt. Nintendo broke the mold for shooter games, creating something truly unique. Instead of aiming for realism, they went with a bright, colorful, and playful style. The focus on covering territory with ink, combined with its energetic vibe, was unlike anything else in the genre. And let’s not forget the charming tagline – “You’re a kid, you’re a squid!” – which still brings a smile to my face.
Nintendo’s *Splatoon* offered a fresh take on the shooting game genre while remaining true to Nintendo’s style. It attracted a wider audience, especially casual players, with its bright colors and emphasis on teamwork over simply defeating opponents. While skilled players weren’t necessary to contribute, the game still offered a high level of competition. *Splatoon* tournaments are known for being incredibly intense, demanding players pay close attention to enemy positions and control of the playing field.
Building on what worked before, each new Splatoon game also introduces exciting new ways to play. Salmon Run has proven incredibly popular, and Splatoon 3’s TableTurf Battle was a hit too. This consistent growth is a really good sign for the future of Splatoon, and especially for Splatoon 4.
Why Splatoon 4 Could Redefine Nintendo Multiplayer
What I’m most excited about with *Splatoon 4* is the potential for Nintendo to really improve its online services. The Splatoon series is already Nintendo’s best online game – maybe second only to Super Smash Bros. – and with better servers and easier-to-use features, *Splatoon 4* could set a new standard for all Nintendo games online.
The next Nintendo Switch, often referred to as the Switch 2, could be a turning point for the company’s online gaming presence. While other developers have been creating strong online games for years, Nintendo has been lagging behind. Though *Splatoon 3* has some of Nintendo’s best online features, it still needs improvements like more reliable servers and other quality-of-life updates. A new *Splatoon* game on the Switch 2 could finally address these issues and deliver a truly polished online experience.
The game could be expanded with bigger matches, different team setups, and fresh ways to play. Adding an online central space would also be great for connecting the thriving player community. These improvements would let Splatoon fully utilize its ongoing, evolving format, with regular updates, events, and new content released throughout the year.
A Campaign That Shines Through Co-Op
The single biggest weakness of the *Splatoon* series has always been its campaign mode. The campaigns in the first two games felt more like extended tutorials, and while *Splatoon 3* improved things, it still didn’t fully explore the potential of its fascinating and original world. It’s a shame players don’t get to experience more of the story and setting, and I’d love to see Nintendo add a co-op mode to the campaign in the future.
Nintendo has a long history of creating fun games for players to enjoy together. *Splatoon* is a great example of a game that would be even better with local co-op. Adding this feature could also encourage Nintendo to really focus on and improve the main campaign, making it a more polished and engaging experience instead of feeling like just a tutorial.
The *Splatoon* series has improved a lot in a short time, and this new addition will truly make it feel finished. *Splatoon 3* is already very popular for its multiplayer, but it could be even better if it brought that same energy to the single-player story and expanded on the game’s lore. Fans love the Inklings and Octolings, and Nintendo has the opportunity to create an even more detailed and engaging world in *Splatoon 4*.
