Horror games seem especially popular right now, but there have always been genuinely frightening titles available. The *Silent Hill* series is particularly well-regarded for its deep, psychological scares. And when it comes to scary games from the PlayStation 2 era, *Silent Hill 2* (released in 2001) stands out. Interestingly, despite all the horror, the game also includes a surprising amount of humor, especially in its secret endings.
Silent Hill 2 plunges players into a terrifying and mysterious town filled with disturbing creatures. Unlike the first game, it focuses heavily on psychological horror, exploring themes of guilt and grief to create a truly unsettling experience. The game features six different endings, with three requiring a second playthrough. Notably, one ending, known as the ‘Dog ending,’ is strangely out of place, but in a way that adds to the game’s unique impact.
Silent Hill 2‘s Dog Ending, Explained
Playing through *Silent Hill 2* normally leads to one of three endings. However, starting a New Game+ unlocks additional possibilities, including the famously quirky “Dog Ending.” This strange detour within the game’s unsettling story is a fan favorite, so the developers, Bloober Team, included it in the 2024 remake of *Silent Hill 2*.
If you haven’t unlocked the special “Dog Ending” in *Silent Hill 2*, be warned – spoilers ahead! This unusual bonus ending reveals a surprising twist: the adorable Shiba Inu James finds wearing a headset is actually the one responsible for all the terrifying events. The dog even offers James apologetic kisses before the credits appear. You can see this quirky ending for yourself in this fan video of the original *Silent Hill 2* dog ending.
Compared to the generally dark and disturbing atmosphere of *Silent Hill 2*, the surprise ending feels surprisingly cheerful, offering a bit of relief after all the intense struggles. It ends with a sweet moment-a dog offering apologetic kisses-and playful dog sounds during the credits. While most fans don’t consider this ending part of the official story, it *is* included in both the original game and the remake, so you’re free to interpret it as meaning a Shiba Inu was secretly behind everything if you like!
Unlocking Silent Hill 2’s Bonus Endings Takes Worth, But It’s Worth It
The ending you get in *Silent Hill 2* changes based on your actions during the game. You can unlock the main three endings by simply finishing the game once. However, to see the bonus endings, you’ll need to start a new game after completing it – this is called New Game+. The Dog Ending is a particularly nice reward and doesn’t take much extra effort, other than needing to play through the game a second time.
To unlock a unique ending in *Silent Hill 2*, you’ll need to start a New Game+ file. While playing, make sure to find both pieces of the Dog Key. This key opens the Observation Room in the Lakeview Hotel, leading to the Dog Ending instead of the usual fate in Room 312. This applies to both the original game and the remake.

Although the Dog Ending is famously the funniest way to finish *Silent Hill 2*, it’s not the only humorous option. Playing New Game+ unlocks a UFO ending, which jokingly suggests aliens were responsible instead of the dog. While not as hilarious, it’s still considered funnier than the other bonus ending, Rebirth, which takes a more serious tone.
The 2024 remake included two additional endings, Bliss and Stillness. Like the other bonus ending, these require finding specific items, but they fit the game’s overall mood much better than the famously quirky ‘Dog Ending.’ Thankfully, that silly but beloved ending returned, alongside these new, emotionally impactful options, ensuring this strange conclusion remains a memorable part of *Silent Hill 2* for a new audience.
