Although Microsoft cancelled the game *Perfect Dark* and closed the studio behind it, The Initiative, recent information has surfaced detailing what the game might have been. The website Mp1st obtained some internal development documents offering a glimpse into the cancelled project.
The Perfect Dark project started because there was a gap in the market for spy-themed games. Popular franchises like Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell weren’t releasing new titles, and no James Bond game was in development. The idea was to capture the feel of those games while still staying true to the original Perfect Dark on Nintendo 64. The studio looked to the HBO series Westworld as an example of how to successfully update an older game for a modern audience.
The Initiative was working on an early prototype of *Perfect Dark* as recently as April. This playable demo, called Vertical Slice 1, was designed to showcase the game’s intended look and feel, and was planned as the first part of what would have been the game’s initial season. Unfortunately, the project was later cancelled.
The document also touched on how the game would play, mentioning abilities fueled by a resource called adrenaline. These abilities would let players deal more damage, strengthen their defenses, and even heal themselves. There also appeared to be abilities that manipulated time, such as slowing it down, and this effect could be prolonged by defeating enemies while time was slowed.
Screenshots suggest the game’s adrenaline system would affect how the main character, Joanna Dark, looks – some images show her with messy hair and a worried expression.
So, I was pretty bummed to hear that Darrell Gallagher, the head of The Initiative, left Xbox last week. It’s been a rough few months – first the studio shut down, and now this. On top of that, I’m seeing reports that Crystal Dynamics, who were helping The Initiative with Perfect Dark, also had to lay off some of their team. It’s definitely a worrying sign for the game.
I’m moving on from Xbox after finishing work on *Perfect Dark* and The Initiative,” announced Gallagher. “I’m incredibly proud of the amazing team I built and led. We worked hard to revitalize a classic game series, putting a lot of creativity and dedication into the process.
We’re incredibly grateful for the amazing response and enthusiasm everyone has shown for our work. It’s been truly inspiring for the whole team.
So, Crystal Dynamics just had layoffs last month, which is always rough. They said it wouldn’t impact the new Tomb Raider game, which is good to hear, but it’s still sad. Basically, they explained that it was a tough call, but they needed to do it to make sure the studio stays healthy and can focus on the important stuff, especially with how quickly things change in the gaming world.
A recent report revealed the layoffs happened because a deal to sell the rights to the game *Perfect Dark* fell apart. The plan involved Embracer Group acquiring the game from Xbox and then selling it to Take-Two Interactive, who would have provided funding to revive the cancelled project.
