The Marvel Cinematic Universe keeps growing with new movies and shows on Disney+. Fans who’ve been following the Marvel films for a long time are familiar with Ryan Reynolds’ *Deadpool* series, and he recently explained why he always starts from scratch with the first draft of those movies. His reason actually makes a lot of sense.
The new movie *Deadpool & Wolverine* had a record-breaking opening weekend, showcasing the playful rivalry between stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Many fans probably think Reynolds had a firm idea of how to play Wade Wilson from the start, but a recent interview with TorontoLife revealed more about his writing process for the character.
I’m drawn to vulnerability, especially when creating comedic characters. When I write the Deadpool movies, I always start by completely discarding my initial draft. That first attempt is usually just pure comedy, which is fun to write, but it lacks substance. So, I scrap it and rewrite the story as a drama, then weave the humor back in.
I’m really impressed! This gives a fascinating look at how the *Deadpool* movies are made, and it all clicks into place. Despite all the R-rated humor in each film, there’s a surprisingly strong emotional core. That balance is probably the main reason why these movies have been so successful with both critics and audiences.

Disney+ offers a streaming library including Marvel Cinematic Universe content and the *Deadpool* franchise. You can start streaming for as little as $9.99 per month with their ad-supported plan. For an ad-free experience, it’s $15.99 monthly, or you can save 16% by paying $159.99 for an annual subscription. See the deal here.
The first *Deadpool* film centered on Wade Wilson’s insecurities and his fear of losing Vanessa’s love after his disfigurement. The second film focused on Cable’s difficult past and how Wade connected with Firefist through shared trauma. These emotional storylines added depth to both movies, balancing out the constant jokes and breaking of the fourth wall.
Naturally, *Deadpool & Wolverine* featured the return of Hugh Jackman as Logan, but this time as a version of Wolverine from a different universe. Unlike the heroic Wolverine we’re used to, this one had failed to protect his family and the X-Men, leaving him full of regret and anger – a stark contrast to Wade Wilson’s usual playful behavior.
Ultimately, *Deadpool & Wolverine* proved the MCU still has major box office appeal. Fans are eager to see Deadpool and Wolverine appear in future Marvel films, particularly the next two *Avengers* movies, but it remains to be seen if and when that will happen.
You can now watch all the *Deadpool* movies on Disney+. Plus, the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film, *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, is coming to theaters on July 24th as part of the planned 2026 movie lineup.
