Square Enix reveals original content for Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake — new stories, powers, dungeons, and more are inbound for this two-pack remake

The highly anticipated Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake is coming out in less than a month! This release beautifully reimagines the original first and second games in the Dragon Quest series.

Square Enix released a new gameplay trailer to build excitement for the remake, highlighting brand-new content that wasn’t in the original Dragon Quest I and II games.

Discover fresh content including new places to visit, exciting power-ups and skills, and compelling new stories.

Here’s a recap of all the new content coming in Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake.

To start things off, let’s discuss a major change for the Dragon Quest I HD-2D remake.

The original Dragon Quest game had battles where you fought one enemy at a time. However, the remake changes this – you’ll now face multiple enemies simultaneously. This is because Dragon Quest 1 lets you control only one character, the Hero.

To help players overcome tough challenges in the Dragon Quest I HD-2D remake, the game will include Sigils. These special abilities, originally from Dragon Quest II and now featured in both remakes, give players powerful new options during battles.

Players will now be able to use Scrolls to learn new magic spells and skills for their Hero, allowing them to gain abilities sooner without needing to level up first.

The HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest II will bring back Scrolls, and some will be exclusive to specific characters in your party.

Plus, the Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake will now include Mini-Medals for those who have already played the game, as if they were always there.

Collecting Mini-Medals has been a key part of Dragon Quest games since Dragon Quest III. Players are rewarded with powerful equipment and items for finding these medals hidden throughout the game world.

The classic Dragon Quest games, Dragon Quest I & II, didn’t originally include Mini-Medals. However, the updated HD-2D remakes now feature them, offering players extra help as they try to save the world.

Next up, let’s discuss one of the biggest changes for Dragon Quest II‘s HD-2D Remake.

This expansion introduces a brand-new underwater area to discover, separate from the original game. Players can explore new dungeons, uncover fresh storylines, collect lore through ‘Memories of the World’, and battle unique enemies and bosses.

The trailer reveals more about Matilda, a new character you can control in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake. She’s a powerful addition to your team, known for her incredibly quick attacks and unpredictable skills that will dominate battles.

Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake will also include a fun mini-game called Tombola. In Tombola, you can win special spheres and trade them for great rewards, such as equipment and items.

Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake new content is bigger than I thought, and I’m all for it.

I suspected Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake would include new content ever since the teaser trailer for the Dragon Quest II HD-2D remake revealed a new fourth party member back in March 2025.

I wasn’t expecting such big changes and additions! We’ll have lots of new skills to master, Dragon Quest I will challenge you with one-on-one battles against many enemies, and Dragon Quest II is gaining a completely new underwater area to explore.

I wasn’t particularly excited about this Xbox JRPG before, but now I am – these improvements look fantastic!

I’m really curious to see what else this new two-game collection is keeping under wraps. It makes you wonder if there might be some hidden post-game challenges, or even hints about potential HD-2D remakes of Dragon Quest 4, 5, and 6 down the line. It’ll be exciting to find out!

Now that Dragon Quest VII is getting remade, it seems likely that Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI will follow suit with updated versions. Personally, I’d love to see those remakes use the beautiful HD-2D pixel-art style.

Only time will tell if these remakes come to pass.

Until then, I’ll be busy saving the world in Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake, which comes out on October 30, 2025. I’m taking on the Dragonlord once again!

As an analyst, I’m seeing this game will launch on a wide range of platforms. That includes the Xbox Series X|S – and the great thing is, it’ll support Xbox Play Anywhere – as well as PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through both Windows and Steam.
