While the European war is wrapping up in season 6 of All Creatures Great and Small, Callum Woodhouse says things are still difficult for his character, Tristan.
Last season, Tristan and Siegfried had a disagreement because Siegfried was frustrated that Tristan hadn’t seen the kind of intense combat he expected. Siegfried felt Tristan hadn’t experienced the full horrors of war, possibly because he’d spent too much time drinking and hadn’t witnessed the most traumatic events.
“And that has definitely been rectified this time around.”
The story jumps forward four years, and according to Woodhouse, Tristan has been through a lot of hardship. He’s been back in active duty and witnessed terrible things, but he’s avoiding dealing with those experiences.
Throughout the show, he attempts to hide his struggles and convince everyone he’s doing well. He maintains the familiar persona everyone expects from Tristan, but subtle clues reveal that he’s actually not okay.
The remarks about Tristan’s unresolved emotional pain are similar to observations made by Woodhouse in 2024, when Tristan came back to Skeldale House after initially serving during the war.
He’s experienced things that will likely have a lasting impact, and he’s definitely faced some really difficult times,” he explained.
He clearly formed connections with people he likely won’t encounter again, and he faced some frightening experiences. He hinted at these situations, often recounting them later as humorous stories.
I suspect there’s a lot he hasn’t fully shared or expressed yet. Throughout the series, he often hid his true feelings with alcohol and humor – that’s typical for Tristan – but I think we’ll learn more about what was really going on as time goes on.

Season 6 picks up with the beloved Skeldale gang in 1945, at the tail end of the conflict.
The show returns to Darrowby with improvements in veterinary medicine, growing families, and some new characters, all hoping for a better and calmer future, according to the official description.
And as ever, you can also expect plenty more “heartwarming human and animal tales”.
As a huge fan, I’m thrilled to share that *All Creatures Great and Small* is back on Channel 5 starting Thursday, September 25th at 9pm! If you’ve missed any of the heartwarming stories, you can catch seasons 1 through 5 right now on My5.
