There’s been buzz that Techland might have scrapped some of their games internally, but they haven’t explicitly confirmed this. In fact, when asked by GamesRadar, Techland’s PR team hinted at shifts in project plans, revealing that developers working on certain projects were reassigned to others instead.
In their announcement, the studio added that no developers at the studio lost their jobs due to these cancellations.
Creating games isn’t always smooth sailing; sometimes new strategies are crucial to produce exceptional games.” The key point is that no layoffs have occurred due to the changes mentioned. Instead, developers were reassigned to other projects and are currently involved in multiple games within our ongoing development pipeline.
Currently, our main priority is to roll out “Dying Light: The Beast” for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Following the release of this game, we’ll reveal details on upcoming titles at an appropriate time.
Among the two cancelled games, as per Polish news source Puls Biznesu, it is presumed that one was possibly the open-world fantasy RPG which the studio announced in 2022. At the time, not much information about the game was disclosed, but the company did confirm that the project was being led by development veterans Karolina Stachyra and Arkadiusz Borowik – individuals who have previously contributed to titles such as The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Last June, I, as a fan, was thrilled to learn that the director of the Dying Light franchise, Tymon Smektała, viewed Dying Light: The Beast not just as a spin-off, but as a legitimate third game in the series. Moreover, he hinted that with Dying Light 2 Stay Human, they had somehow deviated from what made the first Dying Light unique.
In the creation of ‘[Dying Light 1]’, we successfully assembled a game where each part seamlessly connected, and looking back, we may not have fully appreciated its quality,” Smektała reflected.
In simpler terms, “Dying Light 1” catered to our primary audience and offered an intense survival horror experience in an open-world action-adventure setting. However, with “Dying Light 2,” we seemed to have deviated from that formula. Despite its commercial success, the game failed to maintain the tension, horror, and threat levels that were most appealing to our core players.
Later in the conversation, he clarified that for them, it’s more like ‘Dying Light 3’ rather than just another installment. Initially, the project might have had a more modest goal, but the anticipation of bringing Kyle Crane back sparked their enthusiasm. Similarly, they were thrilled about the potential of the new iteration of the engine and the gameplay mechanics.
He’s also discussed that the upcoming game titled “Dying Light: The Beast” will subtly hint towards the future of the series, while simultaneously offering a glimpse into the aftermath of the original “Dying Light” and its additional content known as “The Following“.
Dying Light: The Beast is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S on August 22.
