At Tokyo Game Show 2025, Xbox revealed a significant new update for *Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024*. Called World Update 20: Japan, this free update is now available on PC and Xbox Series X/S. A trailer showcasing the update is available to watch below.
To create World Update 20: Japan, Microsoft collaborated with Bing Maps and Gaya to realistically depict the country’s scenery. The update features 23 landmarks rebuilt using advanced photogrammetry and detailed surface textures. Major cities like Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka, Sapporo, and Tokyo have all been updated.
Beyond that, the game features 67 other notable locations, including famous Japanese landmarks like Osaka Castle, Kaniada Bridge, Shosanbetsu Observatory, Enoshima Sea Candle, and Fukuoka Tower.
World Update 20: Japan features five meticulously crafted airports created in partnership with Gaya. These include Hokkaido Spaceport, Kitakyushu Airport, Rishri Airport, Sado Airport, and Satsuma Iōjima Airport. Each airport is unique, ranging from a spaceport on Hokkaido to an airport built on an artificial island, and even a small, private airfield in a village.
In its announcement for World Update 20: Japan, the company described Japan as a beautiful and fascinating country. It highlighted the stunning landscapes, impressive buildings, and well-known cities. Some of the country’s most famous attractions include Mount Fuji, Osaka Castle, and the modern skylines of cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Sapporo.
As a huge fan of *Microsoft Flight Simulator*, I’m absolutely blown away by World Update 20! It brings Japan to life with incredible detail and color. And it’s not just pretty scenery – there are tons of new missions that really let you explore the country, experiencing its amazing beauty and rich history from the cockpit. It’s a fantastic addition to the sim!
World Update 20: Japan doesn’t just add scenery – it also includes new missions to explore the updated areas. You can take on discovery flights over Chubu-Sangaku National Park and around the Makuhari Messe, test your flying skills in windy conditions at Ōmura Airport, and complete a low-altitude challenge over Tsushima Island. Plus, there’s a rally race waiting for you at Setonaikai National Park.
Microsoft has announced that *Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024* will be available on PlayStation 5 starting December 8th. Players with a PlayStation VR2 headset will also be able to experience the game in virtual reality starting in 2026.
The PS5 version of the game will really take advantage of the console’s features, particularly the DualSense controller. You’ll feel different textures under your feet thanks to the adaptive triggers, and when you’re flying, the triggers will provide varying resistance based on how fast you’re going and how high you are. The game will also support motion controls using the PS5’s gyro sensor.
If you pre-order *Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024* on PlayStation 5, you’ll also get the Northrop T-38A Talon aircraft as a bonus.
