Mahershala Ali candidly discusses his journey with Marvel Cinematic Universe as his upcoming “Blade” movie remains under development. During San Diego Comic-Con 2019, he confirmed that he would portray Blade in the MCU timeline; however, the reboot film has presented one of Marvel Studios’ most significant hurdles since its announcement.
For some time now, the movie based on Ali’s character “Blade” has been stuck in a production limbo, with numerous changes in directors and various screenplay writers attempting their versions. At this moment, not only does “Blade” lack a director, but it is also absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming release schedule.
During a recent interview with Vogue for their new movie Jurassic World Rebirth, actors Ali, Jonathan Bailey, and Scarlett Johansson (a long-time Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran) reached a point where Marvel was mentioned. When asked to name every MCU film that both Ali and Johansson have appeared in, the actor from Blade playfully responded, “Exclude me from this discussion. That’s just a Scarlett question.
Despite the discussion veering towards Johansson’s Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, it eventually circled back to Mahershala Ali’s Blade. However, when this occurred, Ali casually shifted the focus to another topic, which left both Johansson and Bailey chuckling at his nonchalant response.
What Mahershala Ali’s Comments Mean
Although the actors’ comments about Blade seem playful, it’s not hard to imagine Ali feeling some annoyance given how his Marvel Cinematic Universe journey has unfolded so far. The unexpected announcement of his role in 2019 has since led to a film that has been pushed back for more than five years, leaving many fans questioning if the reboot movie will ever materialize.
It’s equally important to note that even if there are fresh details about a new “Blade” film, Ali probably wouldn’t be able to provide specifics due to Marvel Studios’ penchant for secrecy in their projects. Given that this interview primarily aimed to promote “Jurassic World Rebirth,” it seems logical the actor chose not to dwell on “Blade.
Our Take On Mahershala Ali’s Comments
It makes sense that Mahershala Ali might not want to talk much about the ongoing delay in the revival of Blade, as even Kevin Feige’s recent confirmation in July 2024 that he has read a new script for the movie suggests they are actively working on bringing this project to life.
It’s likely that fans won’t be able to watch a new Blade movie until at least Phase 7, given that Marvel Studios is yet to secure a director for the project. Fingers crossed, we might hear some good news about Blade before 2025 ends, which would bring us one step closer to seeing Ali bring the Marvel icon to life on screen.
